When semi-automatic manual transmission was introduced two decades back, nobody knew how popular it would become. Today, the success rate of AMTs is unprecedented, thanks to its fuel-saving capabilities.

Having said that, the technology has itself evolved tremendously over time. For one, the electronic control modules of trucks have led to savings in weight and fuel costs. Secondly, improvements were seen in efficiency and durability in even challenging environments.

These, and many other factors led to improvements made in this technology. The fuel economy was significant. And, it also ensured safety with comfort to the drivers. Most importantly, its functionality and adaptability led to the development of powertrain control, predictive cruise control, and advanced safety mechanisms in conventional trucks. In the future, the technology is expected to become more efficient with improvements like:

Enhanced Capability: While the trucking giants like Volvo are already providing next-generation standard 12-speed transmission, they are looking to improve this capability to 13-14 gears for heavy hauling applications in the future.

More Connectivity: New generation of automatic transmission will be enabled with remote software programming to control its performance and ensure safety on the roads. Integrated powertrains will allow more flexibility in the operations through better connectivity.

Down-speeding: It is a major concern for the manufacturers of new-age transmissions. Down-speeding exerts more pressure on the powertrains and AMTs can help in managing the power with more efficiency. They can safeguard the driveline components for optimal performance of the trucks and trailers.

These trends are expected to change the automatic transmissions for the trucking industry. You can Contact Us for vehicles integrated with such latest technologies.

Have you always considered yourself a heavy truck enthusiast? Dump-trucks, flat-beds, tank trucks? Maybe you've considered entering the industry as a technician but are unsure of what is required, or even where to start. Well, below are a few things you'll need to know if this career is right for you:

Today's Requirements:
Primarily, gone are the days where you must learn on your own and be tossed into the fire on the job. Employers are looking for trained, experienced techs. This means schooling, tests and working towards a degree or certificate via an accredited tech school.

Inspections
During an inspection of a heavy haul truck, you'll need to be thorough and meticulous in your work. These trucks need to be looked at from the inside-out, and that includes:
• Seat belts
• Emergency exits
• Brakes
• Brake Lamps
• Headlamps
• Securement of cargo
• Exhaust system
• Fuel system
• Frame
And that's just the start. There is much work that goes into making sure a heavy-haul truck is in good functioning order.

Certifications
You can achieve certification through various schools and programs in your area. There are several different certifications to attain depending on what kind of equipment you're looking to service:
• ASE (in certain parts of Canada) or diesel certification for diesel mechanics
• Heavy Equipment certification
• Marine Tech certification

New Technologies
There are new and evolving technologies everyday with the trucking industry that will keep techs fresh with knowledge and on their feet. Everything from hydrogen-electric semi-trucks to autonomous trucks are in the works for future use in select areas, and likely throughout the country in due time.
These are just some of the steps to take to become a quality tech in the current Canadian trucking industry. It's a necessary and admirable job that keeps businesses going, and an integral one at that.
