I have been reading about Gauguin. He is, perhaps, the most fascinating to me of all the famous artists that we were to study while we were in art school. The path that he took in order to reach his creative goals was not unlike the path of someone working in a restaurant and slowly switching careers. I think his story is a relevant one. If nothing else it has given me an immense confidence in my current work, which is starting to come along.

I am using my sketchbooks to finally learn how to draw realistically, but also to learn how to draw very abstractly. It is a long process and I have had to abandon some of what I thought were my best ideas in order to learn how to draw again, but I think that it is a good thing.

Failure is the beginning of something new. As I begin to reflect on ten years of sharing my work in blog form online, I begin to think about where I started and how that person is both different than I am now, but the same. I am returning to a similar mindset that I had when I was younger, but with a broader range of experience and a more open heart.
