I've been away for a week for work (Washington, DC, first trip--loved it!) and am happy to be greeted with these lovely, bold 'Milk & Wine' crinum lily flowers.  They smell so nice!  Good bulbs here for partial or full shade.  Happy gardening!   #gardening   #phoenix   #scottsdale   #phoenixgardening   #desertgardening   #xeriscape   #crinum

Here's a fun, smelly stapelia bloom on the east side of the house (S. grandiflora maybe??).  Fun, furry, foul scented flowers (about the size of my hand) pollinated by ants and carrion flies.  Partial shade and water only when very dry keep them happy and bloom.  Easy.  Happy gardening!   #gardening   #xeriscape   #desertgardening   #stapelia   #stapeliad   #scottsdale   #phoenix   #arizona   #phoenixgardening

I get a TON of self-sown oleanders in the garden. Most are white, or a dull/faded pink. If they pop up in a spot that's not TOO offensive, design-wise, I leave them. Here's one that popped up on its own that I love: BRIGHT very double, super fragrant flowers. It's in a bad location so I've taken (and shared) a few cuttings to plant in better locations in the garden. Fun to see the spin of the old genetic wheel of fortune. This one is a winner. Nothing fancy, but I thought I'd share it anyway. My Bauhinia galpinii (sometimes called "red orchid tree" or "red orchid bush") is starting to bloom so I thought I'd share a couple of pics.

I fell in love with these at the fun/silly Living Desert in Palm Springs, California (which has a great plant nursery inside the animal park, of all things). They're amazingly sun/heat tolerant and bloom pretty much all spring and summer. Mine is in 3/4 sun and loves it.  No hard freezes.   Happy gardening!

One of my hand-pollinated Stapelia plants (seedling #8) in bloom this morning.  You can see characteristics from each parent (S. hirsuta x S. gigantea).  Easy plants for partial shade here.  Wilson the tennis ball to show size.  Happy gardening!   #gardening   #stapelia   #stapeliad   #xeriscape   #desertgardening   #phoenix   #scottsdale   #arizona   #phoenixgardening

Even after 14 years here, I'm still surprised at how well hollyhocks do here, but they do! They flower in late spring/early summer and self-sow nicely around the garden too. Our low humidity means no foliage diseases too, which is nice. This one, in bloom this morning, popped up in full, hot sun, nowhere near automatic irrigation, and yet it thrives and blooms nicely each year. That's a 9 foot tall (3 meters) tree aloe 'Hercules' trunk at back right, some spineless opuntias and a big ol' clump of "pride of Madeira", Echium candicans, also self sown in the background. All are easy, happy, fun plants here. Happy gardening!   #hollyhocks   #gardening   #xeriscape   #desertgardening   #phoenix   #scottsdale   #arizona   #phoenixgardening

A nice cherry red flower on a Matucana madioniorum cactus outside on the patio.  This species of cactus flowers more than any other in my garden, no wonder I've collected so many of them, and keep hybridizing between the different colors and planting seeds!  I'm getting overrun with them, but they bloom so often, it's a good problem to have.  3/4 sun keeps them happy and blooming here.  Happily, the flowers last for several days.  Good windowsill plants for cold winter folks too.  Happy gardening!   #matucana   #cactus   #xeriscape   #desertgardening   #phoenix   #phoenixgardening   #scottsdale   #arizona   #gardening

Aloe rudikope, variety 'Little Gem' making an off season flower stalk this morning  (it usually blooms mid-winter).  Tennis ball to show relative size.  Easy in partial shade here.  Happy gardening!   #gardening   #xeriscape   #desertgardening   #phoenix   #scottsdale   #arizona   #aloe   #aloerudikope

Here's a fun Opuntia (prickly pear) in bloom this morning.  I got the original cutting from a piece that had fallen onto a walkway at the wonderful Mission of San Juan Capistrano in California.  It rooted quickly in my little garden and has become a nice plant.  Fun orange flowers, my favorite color!  Happy gardening!   #gardening   #xeriscape   #desertgardening   #phoenix   #arizona   #scottsdale   #phoenixgardening
