Day 27: To Trondheim. Down the memory lane.
300 km with a few ferry crossings, 6 hours in total. The roads today remind me of the long trips I used to do with my parents when we went to the north of Portugal, Minho, to spend holidays at my grandparents house. A big family gathering. And always a very special occasion for all.
Back then there were no motorways so the only option was to take the national road (and hit traffic jams, mainly because of trucks) and from Porto up, secondary roads. I can still remember the narrow roads, the scent of the vineyards, of the wild berries and flowers. Maybe that’s one of the main reasons why I enjoy so much travelling on a bike, to be more in touch with nature.
My mom has named my bike “Akka”, from Selma Laggerlof’s “Nils Olgerson’s fantastic trip around Sweden”. I loved that book as I’ve always loved everything to do with travelling, and so I’m keeping the name! I guess the longing for discovery that fed the hearts of the portuguese sailors and danish vikings still runs in my blood…
I arrive Trondheim and go straight to Nidaros Cathedral. I get there at the same time as a german biker and I park my bike beside his. We visit the Cathedral together, are invited to join the celebrations in honour of Saint James, attend the mass for pilgrims and end up becoming travel buddies!!! We’ll be driving together to Lofoten, a two days ride. But tomorrow morning, Trondheim. A lot to visit!
