The old adage “Perception is reality” applies nowhere more than it does with cable products designed for heavy-duty use.  Clearly, when a product is evaluated for use in a difficult and challenging environment, characteristics such as size, weight, appearance, and ‘feel’ are all part of the intuitive decision making process.

What happens when some of those “heavy duty” characteristics work against the product’s overall performance and useful life?   Could a user feel good about a small, lightweight product replacing a larger, heavier one when the latter has been in use for years in an application that has been correctly classified as ‘challenging’?

The answer is “yes”.

C&M was tasked by a client with helping penetrate a new market by providing them with an innovative new product solution.  While well established, and manufactured with proven materials created for difficult environments, the incumbent product our client was targeting proved susceptible to damage caused by the abrasion it experienced during use. The effects of the abrasion resulted in a shortened product life and increased replacement costs and equipment downtime.

After careful evaluation of the existing product, the environment in which it is used, and the manner in which it functions, C&M engineering identified a specialized jacketing material with a significantly lower coefficient of friction that helped defeat the damage from abrasion. Additionally, the specific gravity of the compound allowed for a lighter cable, which also aided in increasing the product life.

After evaluation and testing, expectations are that this new product will offer a useful life of near ten times that of the industry incumbent product.  Our client now has an innovative cable product to offer that will provide their customers with an opportunity to minimize replacement costs, inventory, and downtime.

Can a small, lightweight product accurately be designated as “heavy duty”?

Absolutely!

C&M Corporation Chosen as Rockwell Automation Supplier of the Year for 2012

C&M Corporation, a vertically integrated manufacturer of bulk cable, coil cords, and cable assemblies, has announced the receipt of Rockwell Automation’s Supplier of the Year Award for 2012.  This prestigious award was made during a supplier conference held in Milwaukee. This was the second time in three years that C&M has received Supplier of the Year recognition.

The award is based on performance against defined Rockwell Automation criteria and measurements throughout the year. In addition to lead-time reduction, on time delivery, quality, and productivity, selection as the Supplier of the Year also includes consideration of other key business metrics such as the quality and frequency of communication, the sharing of “best practices”, joint investment in continuous improvement, responsiveness, and active collaboration in identifying quantitative areas for product or process enhancement.

John Laskowsky, C&M’s President and CEO, commented, “Rockwell Automation’s focus for 2012 was differentiation with the end goal of separating themselves from their competition through innovative products and programs. C&M is honored to be recognized as a key business supplier to Rockwell in this progressive approach to the market and we look forward to continuing to support their initiatives in the future.”

Rockwell Automation and C&M have derived a unified strategy centered on next generation product platforms and supply chain optimization. C&M’s engineering value that includes capabilities such as custom bulk cable design, in house tooling fabrication, and connector over-molding technologies, supported the technical aspects of new interconnect platforms. Rockwell Automation’s extensive product and market knowledge around motors and drives provided the technical direction. As a result, both companies have been able to improve significantly the speed to market for new product commercialization.
