Let us refer to the definition of "palace" before we begin our analysis: palace |palis|, noun: the official residence of a sovereign, archbishop, bishop, or other exalted person: the royal palace. informal: a large, splendid house. Let's focus on the informal: a large, splendid house. Yes, it's a large building and looks splendid from the curb. Your excitement for a kick-ass hotel only builds when you walk through the front door and note the period decor they're executing on perfectly. Then your train derails, bursts into flames, people die, and small animals cry. * The room was not held properly despite proper booking and thus was unavailable for check in. * They seem to rely on shifty email confirmations that make little sense. * No apologies were given, but an alternative room was offered -- at a price increase! * There seem to be only two people running the place, and one could not be found to help point out the location of the aforementioned alternative room. So this alternate room? It's a series of little micro-suites accessed via a small service entrance away from the main house. The one I was offered featured two twin beds pushed together, a musty smell, a bathroom door that appeared to be locked but opened under force to reveal a gust of stale, hot air. There's a little TV on a stand, but it's only about 9 inches off the floor. I guess if you wanted to watch the tube, you could sit indian style on the floor or something. In sum, there is nothing splendid here. Do not stay here: it is not a palace.
