Hi all!

Today, May 1st, I hired 1000 online workers to answer two questions:

Why do you work? - and - What will you do with the money you earn?

They were paid under 10¢ each.

From a bipolar Egyptian who works to make his little brother happy (#297) to a German who saves for Playstation games (#460) the 1000 answers tell the story of 1000 lives and 1000 reasons to work.

See all the answers on

Hope you find it interesting!

So, Google. Why does it have to be so hard to buy a Nexus device? Are you willing to admit the cluster fuck that is the #Nexus4  launch? And promise us things are going to change?

1. You should have known demand was larger. Seriously.
2. Once stock was out, you should have let us pre-order, then at least we wouldn't all have to bang the gates to get to "order direct" (with a 3 week delay). Unless you truly don't want our money, then please continue while we all go shop for any of the other phones available at the click of a button.
3. Your sites should never, ever, for whatever reason go down. And certainly not for hours. You're Google. It's embarrassing to the whole company.

I'm nearly broke after Christmas, but a few days ago me and a friend got the idea to travel to Egypt to get some warmth and spend the rest of our money. We ordered tickets 4 or 5 days ago and I'm writing this from my hotel. As well as being warm, dirty and lovely, Egypt requires a Visa to get in - but the process was quick and painless: I had to show my passport and write down the flight number (as well as pay a small fee) and had a Visa in a total of 20 minutes. (All done on the flight in, of course.)

If I had to travel as a tourist the other way around, as an Egyptian travelling to Norway, things would be a bit more complicated. Not only does the Norwegian Embassy inform me that I should apply weeks ahead (and they guarantee nothing as to the transaction time), the cost would be doubled to 60 euro and they would have to make a background check to ensure I had at least 50 000 NOK at hand. (I had 900 NOK when I boarded the flight to Egypt). I'll also have to make someone in Norway write me a cover letter, send in a full copy of all pages in my passport and if I'm unfortunate enough to visit a relative I'll have to put up proof that we are in fact related.

Norway has been a liberal democracy since 1814, while Egypt has spent 2011 going from a secular military dictatorship to what looks like a religious and shaky democracy - yet Egypt clearly wants visitors - while Norway does not. And it's of course not only Norway - the same is true for all of Europe. I have to ask the same question the Economist does in this weeks issue:

"Why are the walls of fortress Europe so high? Officials cite security concerns. But few migrants who pose a threat seek to obtain legal visas. Europe is shutting out tourists and businesspeople—exactly the sorts it should be cultivating."

A very well made tribute to a very well made argument.

Most of you have probably already seen this, but for the few who haven't:
Congress is holding hearings on a really bad bill called the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) today. If you can call Congress today and ask them not to support SOPA or PROTECT IP, it would take just five minutes but would make a big difference.

If you grew up in a different state or if you can convince your parents to call Congress too, that would really help too. Please reshare wherever you can!

Extremely informative on depression, Stanford lecture by Sapolsky.
Stanford's Sapolsky On Depression in U.S. (Full Lecture)

Having been in a semi-major depression for 3-5 years, this is stuff I wish I knew beforehand - and not least that people around me knew.
