I Grant You Ample Leave by George Elliot +cheetaz49

BY GEORGE ELIOT
"I grant you ample leave
To use the hoary formula 'I am'
Naming the emptiness where thought is not;
But fill the void with definition, 'I'
Will be no more a datum than the words
You link false inference with, the 'Since' & 'so'
That, true or not, make up the atom-whirl.
Resolve your 'Ego', it is all one web
With vibrant ether clotted into worlds:
Your subject, self, or self-assertive 'I'
Turns nought but object, melts to molecules,
Is stripped from naked Being with the rest
Of those rag-garments named the Universe.
Or if, in strife to keep your 'Ego' strong
You make it weaver of the etherial light,
Space, motion, solids & the dream of Time —
Why, still 'tis Being looking from the dark,
The core, the centre of your consciousness,
That notes your bubble-world: sense, pleasure, pain,
What are they but a shifting otherness,
Phantasmal flux of moments? —"

If you are at your most vulnerable (and who isn't if you are admitted to the psychiatric unit) then this is not the place to be. After being admitted, the patient is seated in the main hallway of the unit, where everyone can see them and can sit there for as long as 30-minutes. The other patients have full view of the newly-admitted; these patients are often brought directly from the ER and are tired, depressed and often newly recovering from having their stomachs pumped from an overdose. Basically, the patient is on display and is ignored by the staff. After that, the newly-admitted patient is shuffled from one staff member to the next for skin checks, a short meeting with a social worker/intake worker and is asked to sign numerous papers before they are finally assigned a room. This can take over an hour. The unit smells like urine, has foul bathrooms with moldy walls, a curtain separating the toilet/shower from the bedroom. The beds consist of a thin, prison-like, plastic mattress and has a small paper-thin pillow. Patients are not allowed to rest, even though they are immensely ill after sitting in ER for up to 20 hrs, and are not allowed in the room. They are told to sit in the common area with a blasting TV, people shuffling around, and the chairs are solid, heavy plastic chairs. There isn't one soft piece of furniture in the unit so people with bad backs or arthritis are in constant pain. The staff ignores everyone by keeping their eyes lowered to the floor even though patients may have simple questions like: where is my room? Who is my nurse? When do I eat? (12 hrs after meeting with a doctor (he just passes by your room and adjusts meds in 2--3 minutes). They will avoid answering any questions so the only way to find out anything is to ask another patient. No one is allowed to rest or be in the rooms until 9:30 with lights out at 10:30 and then you must lie in your bed even though you can't sleep. The food is disgusting with snacks of bologna sandwiches passed out in the evening. The urine-smell, the lack of compassion, non-stop "groups" (many on subjects such as WHAT IS GERD and WHAT YOUR TEARS WOULD SAY IF THEY COULD SPEAK) leave the patient tired, overwhelmed andfeeling like a prison inmate. Granted, it is not supposed to be a luxury hotel. but it is a brutal atmosphere for people who need rest, compassion, and the help of good nurses. There aren't any books available and adult patients are encouraged to color together to pass the time. The majority of patients have higher education degrees as well as a good smathering of pre-med students and other high-achieving individuals. They are put side-by-side with people who are drug addicts and schizophrenics who stink and pace the halls at night talking. Research is needed if you are fortunate to have the time to do so to ensure a better atmosphere for recovery. Many felt worse than they felt upon entering. Prison-like atmosphere where all self dignity is taken away.
