Fighting Dark Patterns with social networking and open design - a new article by Marc Miquel.
Dark Patterns are a problem online with deceitful interfaces becoming more prevalent in webpages, software installation processes, and mobile apps. I'm not crying conspiracy, but I'm sure there are companies using analytics tools to discover ways to fool or mislead visitors in order to increase ...

Forging real emotional connections with users requires more than delight, it takes guts - a new article by Amanda O'Grady of Intuit.
Emotional connections are two-way streets. Evoking real and meaningful emotion from our customers requires that we, as designers, bring real and meaningful emotion to the table too. I work for Intuit, where we're making emotional connections with our customers a top priority.

Web Design is NOT Dead, You’re Just Talking About it Wrong - a new article by Nick Dank.

Soda, swordsmen, road maps, and simplicity - Dan Ward shares an excerpt from The Simplicity Cycle.
Complexity is a two-liter bottle of soda. Doled out in reasonable quantities and at appropriate times, it's not bad. In fact, it can be pleasant as an occasional accompaniment to a balanced meal or as a refreshing treat on a hot day. Unfortunately, we're guzzling gallons of the stuff every day ...

Why are you making me answer you like a teenager, Excel? #wtfUX
This piping hot slice of wtfUX comes to us from Kevin Cropper, a project manager with the Peace Corps in Washington, D.C. He's running Microsoft Office 2013 on Windows 7 Enterprise and encounters this semantically stilted error message when opening Excel. Excel's bad semantics ...

When you order a short latte with a drop of whip cream at a coffeehouse you are customizing based on your tastes. When you tailor an app, program, or anything you are interacting with it to get it just right, you are customizing as well. It can take a while and requires some effort on your part ...

The Trouble with Car Headlights - a new #wtfUX from Daniel Brown.
Car designers have gotten smarter about being safer, from finding ways to avoid collisions in the first place (anti-lock brakes, traction control, etc.) to the structure of the car and the materials used to help protect the occupants. Yet, somewhere along the way, a fundamental element of safety ...

A review of the Paychex Flex iOS app by Will Scott shows how payroll companies can improve their mobile experience design game.
Getting your first paycheck at a new job is exciting. However, it quickly becomes a routine event. As ordinary as getting one becomes, paycheck stubs contain vital information that employees need to be able to read and access each pay period. They need to be able to make sure all of their tax ...

Leveraging subconscious rules surrounding availability, affect, and representativeness to reduce friction - a new article by Margaret Kelsey.
We've only got so much mental bandwidth, and it seems like we're always pushing that bandwidth to its limit: multitasking, moving at a breakneck pace, trying to do too much with too little—all of which limits our ability to weigh every possible outcome of our decisions.
