I am so pleased with this pot, just out of the kiln of the very talented US bonsai potter Roy Minarai. Hand-thrown nanban by Roy, the 9" diameter pot has been made for a yamadori Hawthorn of mine he spotted on Facebook last year, I can't wait to get tree and pot united this Spring!

One of my first commissions for 2017 is this multi-trunk Chinese Juniper bonsai. Very faulted, it is relatively cheap bonsai material and as ever, this made it a hell of a lot harder to wring a design out of it.
Image 1) the tree seen from its original front.
Image 2) I decided to turn the tree to find a better base, and to show a front without inverse taper
Image 3) after hollowing and bending the 1"-2" second and third trunks, splitting and bending a thick upper branch, and wiring the primary and secondary branches, the first styling is complete after 8.5 hours work!
Image taken this afternoon, the tree is now approx 24"/60cm tall.

lol yes Peter. There are a few species that definitely do better being collected in late Summer to late Autumn (dependent on climate), beech being one. Others will tolerate it well. But as a general rule of thumb, it is best to collect deciduous trees after the sap start rising and the winter buds start to colour up (February in the UK) up until leaf-burst.

My Pyracantha/Firethorn bonsai, photographed last Summer, is currently having a new pot built for it by Thor Holvila (who also made the Skull pot for my Privet bonsai last year). And here's his design for the pot!
Thor says "This is what I had in mind. Its the "Nidhögg" design. According to norse mythology the world tree Yggdrasil is guarded by the dragonsnake Nidhögg that dwells among its roots. It will protect the tree planted in this pot."

Height of tree 18.5"/45cm, trunk diameter 8"/20cm

Story

Bonsai Artist, Author and Webmaster
Introduction
Harry Harrington was born in Oxford, UK in 1970 and after 20 years in and around Manchester now lives near the Chiltern Hills in Aylesbury. Harry started bonsai as a hobby nearly 20 years ago whilst working as a gardener. Harry started working professionally as a bonsai artist and writer in 2000. His website www.bonsai4me.com started life as a collection of private notes about bonsai that were published as 'Species Guides' in 2001; the first comprehensive study of plant species suitable for bonsai available online. Since that time Bonsai4me has grown on an annual basis and now attracts over 1.5million different visitors each year from around the world. The success and popularity of the 'Progression Series' (articles and photo-series showing the development of a bonsai over many years) at Bonsai4me.com has led to Harry writing and publishing 3 books on the subject via B4MePublishing; Bonsai Inspirations 1 published in 2011 and Bonsai Inspirations 2, published in 2012. Harry's third book, based on Bonsai4me.com, 'Bonsai Basics:The Foundations of Bonsai' was published in March 2015.
Harry continues to write for bonsai4me.com and further books are planned for the future. He teaches and runs workshops in the area around London and is frequently commissioned to undertake styling work on client's trees. Harry specializes in turning poor quality material into works of art and enjoys the challenge of styling 'unsuitable' material for bonsai. Harry rarely shows his trees to the public, preferring to keep a relatively low-profile within the standard Club and Show circuits.
