I was born in NYC and lived there for most of my childhood. I know just what you mean. When I arrive in NYC, I feel a sense of wonder and peace. Those buildings, those markets filled with fruits and veggies, those hot dog vendors. That's my city.
While the beach holds stunning views of the expansive Atlantic Ocean, New York City on a summer day provides an equally majestic sight. Spiraling towers reflect glints of sunshine amidst the rush of traffic and the endless ar...

Stepping Back on This First Day
Today is the first student day of school. Usually this is a time when I can barely think about my own children. I am consumed with making sure the first or second graders coming into my classroom are greeted with joy and a beautiful space. This year is diff...

I always love how you look at the world. PS I did write a splashings poem. You can find it on my new blog.
When the day calls for sun-drenched inspiration my family and I pack up for a quick jaunt to the Long Island shoreline. The usual accoutrements travel with us: a book, newspapers, suntan lotion, refreshments, chairs, and a pa...

Today I'm going to a Maine Writing Project leadership meeting. I'm bringing Jordan Rosenfeld's book to share. I think every writer should read this book. It is a gentle reminder that writer's need to have a writing life that's personal and non-negotiable.

FROM THE FRONTIER OF WRITING by Seamus Heaney

The tightness and the nilness round that space
when the car stops in the road, the troops inspect
its make and number and, as one bends his face

towards your window, you catch sight of more
on a hill beyond, eyeing with intent
down cradled guns that hold you under cover

and everything is pure interrogation
until a rifle motions and you move
with guarded unconcerned acceleration--

a little emptier, a little spent
as always by that quiver in the self,
subjugated, yes, and obedient.

So you drive on to the frontier of writing
where it happens again. The guns on tripods;
the sergeant with his on-off mike repeating

data about you, waiting for the squawk
of clearance; the marksman training down
out of the sun upon you like a hawk.

And suddenly you're through, arraigned yet freed,
as if you'd passed from behind a waterfall
on the black current of a tarmac road

past armor-plated vehicles, out between
the posted soldiers flowing and receding
like tree shadows into the polished windscreen.

Better late than never. This was a super hard post to write but completely heartfelt.

As parents, we may assume that our kids will naturally learn to love to read. But avid readers get there with help — and a library card is a great first tool.

The clean slate of a new year is the blessing of teaching, isn't it? I wish you a joyful year filled with the miracles of kids who are loving books, writing about who they are, and racing to get to school in the morning so they can tell you something.

Yes yes yes yes yes, I said to myself as I read this. I know when I'm taking over and I have to force myself to let it go and let them learn. Perhaps I'll get that tatooed on my hand: let it go and let them learn

How funny! I don't know Mrs. Jewett. I have only been there for two years.
