For Missguided, the leading rapid fashion etailer, keeping its site transactional during cyber weekend was paramount. One of the biggest challenges facing Missguided was managing high spikes in traffic which were placing immense strain on the database. The Session team introduced Continuent, a load-balanced database clustering and replication platform which enabled the Missguided servers to have a highly-available cluster with built-in redundancy. Replicating From MySQL & Oracle into Hadoop

The idea of a database silo - that is, a single database that contains everything - is a rapidly declining environment for most companies. Many use multiple databases to take advantage of the different range of functionality, from their transactional store, to caching and session stores using NoSQL and, more recently, the transfer of information into analytical stores such as Hadoop.

There are many solutions available for moving data and indeed getting data into Hadoop is altogether complicated, but there are benefits and pitfalls to the solutions available. Both manual and Sqoop-based solutions tend to be network and resource heavy and designed to duplicate data from one side to the other. Tungsten Replicator can achieve this duplication, but it also provides the ability to analyse the transactional data in a completely different fashion, that may provide additional depth and breadth from your existing transactional data store.

Tungsten Replicator is a high performance, open source, data replication engine for MySQL and Oracle, released under a GPL V2 license. Tungsten Replicator has all the features you expect from enterprise-class data replication products but with the flexibility of open source. We like to call Tungsten Replicator “Oracle GoldenGate without the price tag.”

Tungsten Replicator is also one of the core components of Continuent’s state-of-the-art database-as-a-service solution, Continuent Tungsten. Tungsten Replicator offers a set of features that surpass any open source replication solution available today: parallel, multi-master and heterogeneous replication. As businesses head into the cloud, it is tempting to use off-the-shelf, service-based solutions for MySQL, such as Amazon RDS.
