I've noticed that Cannondale are selling their CAADX cross bikes with Schwalbe Rapid Rob tyres. This is a fairly cheap, fairly heavy but also fairly tough tyre based on the Racing Ralph tread. I had a wee look and found Racing Ralph is available in 650b x 2.1", which is to say about 53mm - substantially fatter than the 42mm width of the stock Slate tyre, but it would have better grip off road.
