As Gawker's flagship site shuts down after a stealth vengeance campaign by tech-fascist Peter Thiel, I pay tribute to the site's often memorable Middle East coverage.
Gawker, the legendary blog that is shutting down today after nearly 14 years, was better known for covering New York’s power elite than for posts about Israel and Palestine. But the site, pub…

Here's my interview with +Rombauer Vineyards' delightful Richie Allen, who went from intern to top winemaker at the Napa label best known for its big California-style Chardonnays and which has just introduced a great Sauvignon Blanc--its first new varietal in 24 years!

A very personal story about my Labor Zionist childhood, Phil Ochs, and how I learned what he thought about Israel.
Legendary protest singer Phil Ochs, who died 40 years ago, updated “Love Me I’m A Liberal” in 1971 to call out “the arming of Israel.”

My analysis about how Bernie Sanders let down the antiwar movement by refusing to seriously challenge Hillary Clinton's foreign policy, and may have doomed his campaign as a result. Side note: how interesting that in 2016 the GOP will nominate a candidate who opposed the Iraq war while Democrats will pick one who voted for it.
For a few magic weeks, Bernie Sanders was taken seriously as a presidential candidate with a chance to win – a huge watershed for a self-avowed socialist. But after falling short (even if slightly)…

No, Americans don't all admire Donald Trump or want another Middle East ground invasion. On +Elizabeth Spiers' great new site Everup, I run down some of the tricks pollsters and the media use to manipulate how you see public opinion.
How pollsters manipulate how you interpret public opinion.

The worst fears about #PokémonGO—that it demands access to your Gmail—were quickly debunked. But in my first piece for There Is Only R, The Insurrection's new digital magazine about #VR, I ask whether Niantic's wildly successful AR game a step toward the All Seeing Eye, in which AI combines input from countless corporate and government sources into a comprehensive, granular portrait of our lives?

No matter what anyone says I will not be read out of my own family for refusing to support ethnic repression.
Peter Beinart shows how Zionism puts Jews in a double bind: raised to oppose injustice but required to support Israel.

News Genius gives new tools for correcting the New York Times's deeply pro-Israel bias, as in a March 31 Isabel Kershner report on reactions to Israeli occupation soldier Elor Azarya's filmed murder of a wounded Palestinian.
A NY Times report on Israeli reaction to a war crime was infuriatingly context free. Genius annotation gives media critics a new tool.

Jan. 16, 1991: 25 years ago tonight, protesters in San Francisco speak out against the first US invasion of Iraq while others blockade the University Ave. I-80 overpass in Berkeley. Look for me yelling “Peace now!” against a row of CHP in riot gear for a few seconds starting at 1:49.

Donate today for #GivingTuesday and your money goes farther to support reporting on events the New York Times doesn't consider fit to print.

"In conservation circles, the suggestion lately is that encouraging consumers to eat small fish might, ironically enough, be the best way to save them." John Donohue reports on Sustainable Seafood Week for The New Yorker.
