Introduction

Crystal's play WILD, about to open at IRT on Christopher Street, debuted in Chicago in 2012 with Kid Brooklyn Productions, under the direction of Evan Caccioppoli, to great notice. Her work was also featured in Chicago that summer in Collaboration’s Sketchbook Theater festival with a new play commission for The New Colony which will be back for a full run by the company in Fall 2013. In NYC WILD was featured this spring Off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel as part of MCC Theater Playwrights’ Coalition Playlabs, ANOTHER KIND OF LOVE was workshopped at IRT/Overturn Theatre, and CUT finished a run in Boston at Apollinaire Theatre. Crystal, one of Manhattan's “Best Ofs” for OurTownNY magazine, was selected as one of nytheatre.com’s fifteen People of the Year for 2011, and is one of six writers chosen for Terra Nova 2012 Groundbreakers' Group.  She is a member of the MCC Theater Playwrights’ Coalition, Rising Phoenix, a Women’s Project Lab alumni and was nominated for this year’s Doric Wilson Award. GEEK, her upcoming new play for Obie-Award Winning Vampire Cowboys will premiere in Spring 2013 in NYC under the direction of Robert Ross Parker. She is currently working on a new play for director Daniel Talbott which will be produced this fall. Her plays are available from Sam French, where she also teaches full length playwriting. Crystal recently was featured in a short video piece at the Huffington Post which features filmed monologues from Cut and Wild: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jody-christopherson/cutting-up-the-wild-a-fil_b_1593424.html

ABOUT WILD ...

“Skillman and director Evan Caccioppoli get two things exactly right: (1) the special ring of hell that is living with someone you’ve broken up with and (2) the fact that long-term love is more than anything an act of determination.” -- Time Out Chicago

“Playwright Crystal Skillman shows her talent for storytelling ...Wild is quite funny, honest, sexy and entertaining.” -- Chicago Critic

“Not only is Skillman’s script filled with conflict, interesting characters and stark sexuality, but Caccioppoli’s direction allows it all to play out naturally." -- Centerstage Chicago

“The acting is phenomenal, and it helps that Skillman draws complex and diverse characters ... “Wild” is boldly honest about the (at times absurd) nature of life and the human experience.” -- New City Stage, Rob Underwood

"I just saw Psychonaut Librarians at Sketchbook Reincarnate that was also written by Skillman. This is quite a different work and shows a great range in her writing talents. The script is a blend of humor and pathos that manages to bring out emotions in this viewer" -- Chicago Theater Beat

CUT

"For decades Hollywood's sick soul has provided cannon fodder for novelists and screenwriters. With "Cut,"... playwright Crystal Skillman presents a modest "Hurlyburly" for our time, taking aim at reality television...the real star is the script, bristling with vitality in a compact 90 minutes." -- New York Times Critics Pick, Andy Webster

“Skillman uncovers a universal issue that strikes to the core of human existence.” -- Backstage Critics Pick, Suzy Evans

““Cut is a smart, crisp, and exciting piece of theatrical craft.”  -- nytheatre.com

BIRTHDAY

“’Birthday’ tells a simple, striking tale of two disappointed souls coming together.” -- Time Out Chicago

“Skillman creates a short masterpiece -- Fringe Review UK

THE VIGIL OR THE GUIDED CRADLE

“Skillman's usually canny play [The Vigil] cuts a jagged swath between drama and thoughtful discourse on the topic of torture.” – Mitch Montgomery, Backstage

“Timely and incisive.” – Martin Denton, nytheatre.com

HACK!

“If Quentin Tarantino were to direct his own version of Office Space, it may come close to the level of comic firepower that is produced from this spot-on comedy by the incredibly talented Crystal Skillman.” -- Michael Roderick, Broadway Word
