Port Arthur, just outside Hobart is a city with a past. Its convict past makes it one of Tasmania's biggest tourist attractions. Dating back to 1830, it was Australia's largest penal settlement until it was closed in 1877.

One of the nice things about Sydney is the number of national parks and bushland that surround many of the suburbs. Taking just a short walk along one of the fire trails into the bush allows you to escape urban living and breathe in some fresh air. It is good to get out from behind the desk once in awhile.

One of Sydney’s Secret Spots
‘Middle Head Fortifications’ at the end of end of Old Fort Road, Middle Head, Mosman is old (over 140 years old) and is a little know spot that is great to explore especially with kids. If you go midweek chances are you will have the whole place to yourself.

The fort was built between 1870 and 1911 and formed part of Sydney Harbour's defences designed to fire at enemy ships as they attempted entry through the Sydney Heads. The area and underground tunnels were used to train some of Australia's first troops who were sent to Vietnam.

For more about its history and information check out Middle Head Fortifications on Wikipedia.

Google+ Australia shared a picture of the Great Barrier Reef taken from the air today, so through I would share one from below. Apparently the Great Barrier Reef is the only living organic collective that can be seen from space.

Another ocean / space trivia fact I came across at the Australia museum recently is: More people have walked on the moon than have been to the deepest part of the ocean.
