Here's a really neat, classic experiment that's always fun to see. When you place uranium inside a cloud chamber, you can see it decay and emit bits of radiation. It's like seeing little alpha particle torpedoes shooting out in every direction, leaving a trail behind.

Now this!

Shall we play a game?

Researchers at DeepMind have published a paper in the journal Nature wherein they describe a novel algorithm, called a deep Q-network (DQN), that can learn to excel at a wide variety of classic Atari 2600 videogames — everything from side-scrolling shooters to boxing to 3D car racing — using only the raw screen pixels, a set of available actions and game score as input.

By using a neurobiologically inspired mechanism, termed experience replay, DQN performed at more than 75% of the level of a professional human player in more than half of the 49 games tested, sometimes even developing long-term strategies for success. Head over to the Google Research blog to learn more about the Machine Learning framework that made this possible.

Put headphones on and watch this video:
On a crisp afternoon late last year, I made my way to Manhattan’s Upper East Side to meet Edgar Choueiri, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University. Choueiri also...

After the Paris shootings, a thought provoking reminder from Andy Borowitz.
It is possible to defend the right to obscene and racist speech without promoting or sponsoring the content of that speech.

Take care of yourself this year.
You may be the patient. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be an active participant in getting the best possible care. These speakers have ideas on how.

It's a nice place, but probably not 5 stars. No Wi-Fi in the rooms, the buffet has strange hours but the staff is incredibly well mannered and go out of their way to help. The business centre is not up to scratch.
