Vibrant and big – but easy – Lisbon is not only beautiful, but one of the oldest capital cities in the world! I posted many of the photos in this series on my Instagram account, Travelknowing, exploring the monuments and the history behind the sights in a photo a day, plus some other other photos that didn’t make it into my original blog post. Enjoy exploring delightful Lisbon!

The wild west really was wild in the lawless town of Bodie! You won't see any staged reenactments of shootouts in the street, or even any restaurants or bars to get a bite to eat - this Ghost Town is preserved in a state of "arrested decay" and a fascinating trip back in time to visit. #bodie #california #ghosttown

Do you think a 7 hour drive is too far for just 3 nights? It was totally worth it for a Mammoth Mountain getaway! Before this quick trip I’d only been up in Mammoth for skiing. But that’s only one side of this terrific year round resort area – I fell in love with the spectacular scenery, the amazing hikes, and the fascinating geology. It definitely won’t be the last time we get away to Mammoth, but for much longer next time!

Where do you go to hike among the tallest living things on the planet? The California Coastal Redwoods! On a road trip to northern California we visited a lot of the redwood parks, but it was the hikes among the trees in Jedediah Smith State Park that ended up being my favorite – a beautiful place with lot of variety, from the massive old redwoods to streams and rivers, a scenic drive, and a huge variety of trails. #jedediahsmith #redwoods #hiking

Do you love road trips? I love the freedom and flexibility of going wherever and whenever you want, plus being able to drive to areas that you just can't get to on public transportation. On a road trip to Southern Oregon we spent 5 nights based in Grants Pass, Oregon, and we did this terrific drive - lots of fun stops featuring local sights, history and a whole lot of incredible scenery.

Road Trip! At about 5+ hours, it's not the shortest drive from San Diego to Death Valley but with great weather and desert temperatures, the idea of that super dark night sky for stargazing and a girlfriend who said "why not?", we left the men holding down the fort at home and were off for 2 nights in Death Valley! #deathvalley #nationalpark #desert #roadtrip

Death Valley – an evocative name for the hottest, driest and lowest of the U.S. National Parks and of course I wanted to see it! We decided to drive there and back from vacation condo in Las Vegas...2 hours there and back plus driving makes a long day - but it was worth it! What do you do for an afternoon in Death Valley? I'll tell you what we did, and what we could have done differently...
