The dynamic staff and volunteers at the LINC are already planning their next photographic adventure. They are inviting west coast residents to be a part of the next ABC Open project, creating Now and Then images from the Mount Lyell Mining Disaster photos of 1912.

2012 will mark the 100-year centenary of the North Mt Lyell Mine Disaster, in which 42 people were killed. This years Queenstown Heritage and Arts Festival coincides with the centenary of Australia's worst underground mining disaster. A number of projects are planned to mark this occassion.

Bragging rights
Queenstown's history has long been tied to the mining industry. This mountainous area was first explored in 1862. It was long after that when alluvial gold was discovered at Mount Lyell, prompting the formation of the Mount Lyell Gold Mining Company in 1881. In 1892, the mine began searching for copper. The final name of the Mount Lyell company was the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company.
