What You Should Know about the IRS Get Transcript Service Online Data Breach

Last week the IRS reported that its online Get Transcript service had been breached this past tax season.

• About 104,000 taxpayers were affected.

• The breach didn’t involve the IRS tax filing system, just the Get Transcript online service.

• As a result, the online Get Transcript service has been shut down temporarily.

• The IRS will send letters to taxpayers whose information was compromised.

• The letters will detail free credit-monitoring services.

• You can still request copies of prior-year tax returns through their Get Transcript by Mail service.

Please contact our office at 978.462.6674 if you have any questions or concerns.

More Tips for Dealing with Identity Theft

Last week we told you about some important steps to take to thwart identity theft. Here’s some additional follow-up tips to ensure you reduce your risk:
• Don't carry around documents that contain your Social Security number.
• If anyone asks for your Social Security number, make sure they have a valid reason.
• Shred documents with identifying information rather than throwing them in the trash.
• Check your credit report and Social Security Administration earnings statement annually.
• Protect your computer, cellphones, and tablets by using and updating firewalls, anti-spam/virus software, and security patches for your operating systems.
• When accessing financial accounts using the Internet, use strong, individual passwords - and change them periodically.
• Never give personal information over the phone or online unless you initiated the contact.
Remember the IRS never contacts a taxpayer by email, texting, or social media to request personal or financial information. If you receive an email from someone claiming to be from the IRS, it's a scam. Don't respond! Report any suspicious online or emailed phishing scams to phishing@irs.gov. For more information, be sure to visit the IRS Identity Protection page.
