Got this up and running in an EC2 instance this weekend. Now it's time to pull it apart, figure out how it's working, and get PHP working with it so we can use it. I think this would be particularly awesome for on demand Dev/QA instances. The main hurdle is going to be figuring out how to manage the databases since they vary depending on region.

Hmm, interesting. This isn't licensed?

All I really need is php and maybe some java or node. Ideally we'll be able to remove the services we don't need like Mongo and Redis as well.

Inspired by my general geekyness and hackernews 'weekend project' I decided to get chef-server up and running under centos (yes, I know). Now to work on building recipes for a LAMP stack to get up to speed on chef.

I've been playing with puppet this week. Fun stuff, especially since it could automate about 50% of our work and help reduce the oh do many human errors we see daily.

My favorite part though is the configuration enforcement. Finally I will be able to enforce a standard across our environments and have either approval for any one off changes or roll back the config to an approved state.

So one night drunkenly working on some mail condigs I created a user test/test on a dev box (of mine) and forgot I did it. 4 days later linode could usage warnings. Box has thousands of tcp connections to a php script.

gg.

The fact that I knew all of these things makes me very happy. It's definitely worth your time to go through this article.

Plugins and configs are great, and I did the same thing the author did. He says to start with a minimal config, but I disagree. It's useful (imo) to start out with abhuge bloated config just to see what's out there and reduce from that point. You will eventually end up with the useful bits and cull the rest.

Yeah from what I understand Jenkins would only really be used to run tests against the code. So it doesn't package or compile anything since as you said there's no reason to. It creates a directory structure that contains the output from things like phpunit and what not.

I think that ultimately you could write a plugin (if it doesn't exist) to create rpm's with the code. I'm now realizing how nice war files are, haha.

Yay! Bootstrap nagios server with some fake hosts doing default checks. Just realizing how amazing chef is and taking the time to (start) learning it is one of the most gratifying things I've done in a while.

It's always awesome when you find a chance to automate something and document it in the same sweep.

You know how you sometimes listen a band or a song a bunch of times and never really hear it? This song is pretty obvious, but I didn't realize the whole theme of this album until tonight.

Great song. Love this band to pieces.

I would give Evernote notebabies if it were possible to use a vi keymap. For now we'll just be friends with benefits.
