We ♥ bats: Katie Gillies, Imperiled Species Coordinator

I love the frog-eating bat (Trachops cirrhosis). I have worked with them extensively in Panama. They are super ugly, with warts all over their faces. But very smart! I worked with them in close proximity in flight cages. When we caught a new one, we’d have to keep them in a tent and teach them to eat fish from our hands. Then, once they knew to eat fish, we’d release them into the flight cages to run sensory tests on them with frog sounds through a speaker system. So I got to spend a lot of time looking right into their little eyes, watching their ears twitch around, and hand feeding them. Very cool.

Smithsonian Scientist Rachel Page also likes frog-eating bats. Check it out: http://bit.ly/1fhlaOs

We ♥ bats: Mel, Administrative Assistant & Receptionist

My favorite bat is the straw-colored fruit bat (Eidolon helvum). Seeing BCI's ambassador bat, Zoe (pictured), in person made me realize how gentle and intelligent these creatures are.
