The ancient Romans used a “barleycorn” to measure feet when making a sandal. In 1324, King Edward of England signed a royal decree making barleycorns the official unit of measurement for sizing shoes. The ‘barleycorn’ system is still in use today and is the basis for shoe measurement in the United Kingdom and Ireland. A barleycorn is approximately 1/3 of an inch, the equivalent of one shoe size.
