The Earth Genome seeks to makes environmental information more accessible, currently in testing by chemical giant, Dow. We're excited to see how the tool develops.
Global leaders in sustainability measure much more than impact, they are focused on measuring all up and downstream inputs and outputs to really find ways to improve performance on social and environmental metrics, and to translate those improvements into a common denominator that everyone understands: currency. Tracking performance this way is often called natural capital accounting. Many organizations that delve this deeply into t...

End-of-life issues present an important challenge to organizations. In this featured white paper, read how the issue is evolving and how responsibility goes beyond product design.
Just because a product is recyclable, doesn't mean it is going to be recycled by the end user, nor does it mean that the organization can write off any responsibility of the management of products at their end-of-life. End-of-life issues present an important challenge to organizations, from facilitation of recycling and measuring effectiveness of recycling programs, to shifting to continuous use models. "Recycling should not be lo...

It's never too early to go back to school (or too late for that matter). Even if you're chomping at the bit for your first sustainability consulting gig or established in your role, take advantage of any spare time by brushing up on basic business skills or fine tuning your sustainability knowledge.
Sustainability consulting is about so much more than caring about mitigating the effects of climate change. We often hear about the passion and energy aspiring consultants hope to bring to the field, but what a good consultant really needs is business knowledge, a solid understanding of the sustainability field, consulting skills, and change management skills. Of course, growing into the role is part of the process of developing into ...

Being deeply involved in the sustainability consulting industry, we find it essential to periodically address those organizations who haven't yet made first steps toward a sustainability strategy: It's never too late to get started and it's definitely worth it.
Enjoy this post from the SSC archives. SSC President, Jennifer Woofter, was featured in an article about the corporate benefits of sustainability. “As manufacturers begin to unravel the complexities of corporate social responsibility, they’re finding that it’s made up of much more than simply going green.'...Despite this, many manufacturers are taking CSR seriously because of the litany of influences they do face — not least of whic...

Asking employees to change behavior, for whatever reason, takes buy-in, motivation strategies, and patience. Don't rely on shortcuts and tricks to create meaningful change.
Just a few years ago, everyone seemed to have a signature block pleading for the trees – “Don’t print this e-mail for our planet” or “Think before printing this email.” And then those tree-loving messages mostly disappeared. Marketing and behavioral research may be indicating that “nudge” marketing, or deliberately manipulating choices to change behavior, may backfire. Nudges can be condescending If your employees need to print a r...

Telecommuting is great for many reasons (lower commuting emissions, less time sitting in traffic, a happier workforce), but it also presents challenges.
Enjoy this post from the SSC archives. A growing number of companies allow employees to work from home some or all of the time. That's great for many reasons (less time spent in traffic, lower commuting emissions, happier workforce!), but also presents challenges. Today, we're inspired by three articles on how to create, manage, and inspire the best virtual teams. Enjoy! Tips for Transitioning an Office-Based Company to Remote Work...

One of the biggest challenges in sustainability consulting is helping client jump from developing a sustainability strategy to actually implementing the plan.
Enjoy this post from the SSC archives. The implication is obvious — strategists and executors must work together better to bridge these two worlds. It's common sense. Unfortunately, it's far from common practice. What typically happens is an awkward hand-off between the two. In the worst cases the strategists adopt an elitist, disconnected mindset: We're the idea people, someone else will make it happen. They don't bother to truly u...

Around the house it's easy to joke about "throwing money at the problem," but printing money isn't going to do a bit of good in the fight against climate change. Or is it?
