Being deeply involved in the sustainability consulting industry, we find it essential to periodically address those organizations who haven't yet made first steps toward a sustainability strategy: It's never too late to get started and it's definitely worth it.
Enjoy this post from the SSC archives. SSC President, Jennifer Woofter, was featured in an article about the corporate benefits of sustainability. “As manufacturers begin to unravel the complexities of corporate social responsibility, they’re finding that it’s made up of much more than simply going green.'...Despite this, many manufacturers are taking CSR seriously because of the litany of influences they do face — not least of whic...

Asking employees to change behavior, for whatever reason, takes buy-in, motivation strategies, and patience. Don't rely on shortcuts and tricks to create meaningful change.
Just a few years ago, everyone seemed to have a signature block pleading for the trees – “Don’t print this e-mail for our planet” or “Think before printing this email.” And then those tree-loving messages mostly disappeared. Marketing and behavioral research may be indicating that “nudge” marketing, or deliberately manipulating choices to change behavior, may backfire. Nudges can be condescending If your employees need to print a r...

When you think you can't do something, and you tell the world you can't do it, how do you pull yourself together and accomplish the "impossible" anyway?
Nothing inspires us like a good TED talk, and here’s one of our favorites. Enjoy it! About the speaker: Christiana Figueres is the executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). She led the December 2015 climate talks in Paris, bringing 195 global leaders to make steps toward slowing climate change. About the talk: Christiana Figueres talks about her work in bringing the leaders of 195 ...

Becoming a sustainability consultant may not be what you think it is, and getting there can be quite a learning experience.
At Strategic Sustainability Consulting, we field hundreds of requests a year from people wanting informational interviews. One of the most popular questions we get is: "How did you get into sustainability consulting?" In this short video, SSC President Jennifer Woofter tells her story about becoming a sustainability consultant. Need more help with your new career in sustainability? Register for our online course, Sustainability Con...

Are we measuring the wrong national metric? The Kingdom of Bhutan has spurned GDP in favor of a sustainable scale centered on happiness. Check out this interesting take on how government can promote sustainable living.
Nothing inspires us like a good TED talk, and here’s one of our favorites. Enjoy it! About the speaker: Tshering Tobgay is the prime minister of the Kingdom of Bhutan. He is the second democratically elected prime minister, a social media star, and is leading his country based on principles of sustainability, well-being, and “Gross National Happiness.” Tobgay, an optimistic leader in tumultuous global environment, is focused on stabi...

Changing someone's mind isn't easy. If you know right now that your big sustainability pitch is heading for a "no," you should start the process of persuasion today. It's a long, slow journey, but could pay off.

Telling your sustainability story, however compelling it may be, might not cut it in the future, as stakeholders want to help you shape it.
The sustainability report is in a transformational time. Companies collecting data and publishing well-designed, static PDF files (or still printing reports on glossy paper), will soon find themselves behind the curve. The Global Reporting Initiative’s latest report, The Next Era of Corporate Disclosure: Digital, Responsible, Interactive questions the framework of the sustainability reporting process, asking tough questions about the...

Instead of working so hard to make an existing business more sustainable, some companies are creating sustainable business models. Check out The Abundance Cycle tool to see if your business or idea can uncover a sustainability sweet spot.
Like a broken record, we continue to push out the message that sustainability cannot be a checklist or afterthought. Sustainability must be part of an organization’s core strategy, especially as regulators, stakeholders, and investors continue to push for meaningful progress on social and environmental impacts. Simultaneously, the idea that sustainability must continually justify its ROI is old news. Sustainability is profitable, ch...

While world leaders were patting themselves on the back late last year for signing a historic climate agreement in Paris, at least one expert thinks the accords won't come close to creating meaningful impact on climate change.
If there is one video you should watch this month about climate change, it’s the closing segment of the Green Biz 2016 conference. Speaker James Hansen, the former chief climatologist at NASA and a climate change expert, calls out pretty much everyone by pointing out how government inaction, as he sees it, is limiting progress on climate change. So, if Paris is a “fraud,” then what will actually help combat climate change? Don’t worr...

With ever-better options available to accurately and securely track sustainability data, don't continue to rely on risk and error-prone spreadsheets.
Enjoy this post from the SSC archives. The old saying goes “If it is important, you must manage it; if you want to manage it, you must measure it,” but too many companies today use spreadsheets to track their environmental impacts. Would you use a spreadsheet to track your corporate finances? To monitor your inventory? To log all of your personnel data? Using a spreadsheet may seem like the simplest way to track your sustainabili...

Can celebrity endorsements help change consumer behavior for the "greener?" Check out an interesting concept in New Zealand that is tapping into the competitive spirit to sell consumers on reducing their carbon footprints.
Athletes and celebrities have been pitching consumer products for what seems like … ever. But instead of pushing tennis shoes and Cadillacs, what if athletes and celebrities were pushing hybrids, smart thermostats, energy-efficient light bulbs- or pushing the idea of not purchasing anything at all? An entrepreneur in New Zealand has centered an entire business model, Project LiteFoot, around getting the nation’s most famous athletes ...
