Are we measuring the wrong national metric? The Kingdom of Bhutan has spurned GDP in favor of a sustainable scale centered on happiness. Check out this interesting take on how government can promote sustainable living.
Nothing inspires us like a good TED talk, and here’s one of our favorites. Enjoy it! About the speaker: Tshering Tobgay is the prime minister of the Kingdom of Bhutan. He is the second democratically elected prime minister, a social media star, and is leading his country based on principles of sustainability, well-being, and “Gross National Happiness.” Tobgay, an optimistic leader in tumultuous global environment, is focused on stabi...

With ever-better options available to accurately and securely track sustainability data, don't continue to rely on risk and error-prone spreadsheets.
Enjoy this post from the SSC archives. The old saying goes “If it is important, you must manage it; if you want to manage it, you must measure it,” but too many companies today use spreadsheets to track their environmental impacts. Would you use a spreadsheet to track your corporate finances? To monitor your inventory? To log all of your personnel data? Using a spreadsheet may seem like the simplest way to track your sustainabili...

Can celebrity endorsements help change consumer behavior for the "greener?" Check out an interesting concept in New Zealand that is tapping into the competitive spirit to sell consumers on reducing their carbon footprints.
Athletes and celebrities have been pitching consumer products for what seems like … ever. But instead of pushing tennis shoes and Cadillacs, what if athletes and celebrities were pushing hybrids, smart thermostats, energy-efficient light bulbs- or pushing the idea of not purchasing anything at all? An entrepreneur in New Zealand has centered an entire business model, Project LiteFoot, around getting the nation’s most famous athletes ...

Sustainability reporting and regulatory oversight requirements continue to inch closer to one another. Companies should look at today as a chance to get ahead of the game in reporting and tracking data before the inevitable mandated sustainability reporting era rushes in.
From the Paris Climate Talks to changes in the GRI, we keep seeing the needle move toward regulation and refinement in sustainability reporting. We’ve said it before, and we will say it again, sustainability reporting is no longer optional. Companies that aren’t aligning their strategy around sustainability now are soon going to be left in the dust – or maybe even taken to court as governments are increasingly enacting legislation th...

What do "paper or plastic," "peak curtains," and green marketing have in common? An emerging discussion about the temporal tradeoffs in making, marketing, and demand of consumer products. It may be time for a dramatic shift in consumer values to really push the envelope on sustainability.
For years, organizations have been buying into the “waste less to be green” strategy. Sustainability is defined as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” – i.e. save some stuff for future generations. So, it is natural to assume that by using fewer resources today, we are saving them up for our children’s children’s children. Sometimes this pans out, sometimes...

Unless you've landed a job in a large firm, chances are you'll need to broaden your business skills to be a successful sustainability consultant. Look for mentors beyond our field to strengthen your business.
Everyone talks about mentoring, some with an eye roll and some with awed reverence of that one person who changed me forever. If you’re a sustainability consultant, you should be looking for mentors in places you may not have thought to look. The obvious places we look for sustainability mentors: other consultants, professors, sustainability leaders. But running a consultancy is more about sustainability, it’s about business skill...
