The other night I watched the 2013 documentary ‘The Punk Singer’ about the life and times of activist, musician, and cultural icon Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of bands such as Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and The Julie Ruin. The film blew me away and gave me a huge appreciation of Hanna’s music and point of view. I know I’m not the usual demographic for Hanna’s music but her music and lyrics just seem so honest and real. She is a heroine of the 1st degree.

One new show I've been digging this winter is @Midnight on Comedy Central. It is shown at Midnight (natch) after The Colbert Report and is hosted by hot Internet star Chris Hardwick. It's a 'game show' made of a panel of three comedians riffing on…

I got to listen to the newest album from Dum Dum Girls, 'Too True', after hearing them play on the Late Show with David Letterman show the other day. Loved the whole album. Of course I'm a sucker for anything with an 80s sound. The song they played on…

Once again the late night TV talk shows introduce me to a band that I didn't know about and now like. Washed Out is a singer-songwriter and record producer whose music reminds me of Lush with a touch of Portishead. He performed the single 'All I Know' on…

Cable TV is expensive. Most standard packages include hundreds of channels but you have to ask yourself, are those channels worth it. The current pricing scheme the industry uses means your hundred dollar payment supports a lot of filler material that…

Today is International ABBA Day marking the 40th anniversary of the single, 'Waterloo', that brought international fame for the pop group ABBA. It is also the 15th anniversary of the opening of the musical 'Mamma Mia!' that used ABBA songs. Celebrate by…

The other day I caught Lake Street Dive (LSD) on the Colbert Report show and checked out a video of the song they did. Loved it. They have a pop-jazz mix going on that sounds fresh. Their new album, coming out soon, 'Bad Self Portraits' has some great…

Andrew Mayne is a magician, illusion designer and filmmaker. He has worked for Penn & Teller and the Amazing Randi. He has a new show on A&E titled 'Don't Trust Andrew Mayne'. I normally like magic shows but for some reason Mayne's show rubs me the wrong…

Tuesday night I got to watch the pilot episode of 'Intelligence' on CBS. This was one of the mid-season shows I've been waiting to start and now that it is here, I enjoyed it. It reminded me of the classic 'The Six Million Dollar Man' show from back in…

I swear, as minute after minute ticked off as I re-watched the 1991 comedy 'Career Opportunities', I kept saying to myself: 'where is the roller skating?' Of course how I remembered the film had nothing to do with how the film actually plays out. I could…
