"Hey, let's go park!" A curious activity on Sunday mornings in Motomachi, Yokohama seems to comprise parking your ridiculous car and refuelling at Starbucks. There are only a handful of spaces and these photos were taken over several weeks. Now when I am nearby I always go to see if there is a one I haven't seen before. Oh no - I've become a hobby car spotter!

Our entire kitchen workspace.

The chemistry set look is due to our trip to San Francisco last year, where we discovered that siphon coffee makers come from Japan. http://pickturs.blogspot.jp/2011/12/san-franciscan-kohi.html

There is a paper in GRL "The dynamics of a seismic wave field: Animation and analysis of kinematic GPS data recorded during the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake, Japan". Unfortunately it is behind a paywall, but here's a snapshot (the overall [massive] displacement field has been removed to show the dynamics of the event). The full 30s animation also includes the second earthquake about 30 minutes after the first.

I thought it was a bit odd that all you have to do is make an animation to get a paper in GRL these days, but watching it I was surprised at the extend to which it brought back memories of the shaking earth.

If you do have access to GRL, here's the link...

Trying out the Google+ photo features, I moved album from flickr. This one is my favourite 12 shots from 2009.

Julie, your photos of Japan are wonderful. We rarely see this natural side of Japan. Very pleasing to these "green" eyes. I no longer can hike but live vicariously thru the eyes of wonderful photographers such as yourself. Thank you!

Although I've lived in Japan for a decade, meaning that my personal climate change record is a lot more dramatic than this, spiritually I'm a Lancastrian. So this local climate change record is particularly interesting to me. It goes back an impressively long way too....
