           256 Shades of Gray™ 2017
    Online B&W Photography Workshop

hosted on G+ using G+ Communities

"Enrollment" will continue into January or until we have 50 people signed up; whichever comes first.

We will soon enter our 5th year of our online B&W photography workshop, 256 Shades of Gray (256SOG). In 2016, we had a great year, started a second mid-year group, learned and grew together and saw some fantastic B&W photography work. We here at 256 LLC are preparing for an exciting 2017 edition with exciting new content and a continuing refinement of the assignments we've presented over the last 4 years.

What is on your 2017 New Year Resolution list? Making those fantastic B&W images…growing your artistic perspective….getting to the next level with your photography.  The 256 SOG (Shades of Gray ) Community will continue its online learning/mentoring structure with feedback and group participation wrapped around challenging assignments.  We will introduce more artistic growth opportunities. We will continue to emphasize growing our photography and post processing skills in Black and White Fine Art Photography.  New 2017 content will explore more contemplative photography, more B&W technique, more tips to improve your artistic perspective and Intent. We all will learn more… grow more…together. So what are you waiting for? Sign up now.

Looking forward to seeing you online in 2017. We're anticipating a great year and a great group of continuing and new members!

2016 pricing model
- 120 $ / year new students - 100$ / year for continuing, prior students or our Arcanum apprentices

To sign up leave a comment below. We'll contact you with payment instructions and a community invitation sometime in late-December. The workshop will begin the first week of January with the first assignment running two weeks.

The 2017 edition of 256SOG is limited to a total of 50 members. Photographers of all levels are welcome. More advanced meme3brs are a great resource for less experienced photographers.

The "heart" of the community is peer review in a private setting.  With each new assignment, we try to push people outside their comfort zone to help them grow as artists. We try to help people see the world differently and to understand their photography in news ways. We want you to be able to say, "I'm not a photographer. I'm an artist with a camera." ™

It's highly recommended that people signing up have the Adobe Photographer's subscription and the NIK Collection by +Google+ .  As of this writing, the Nik collection is a free download provided by Google. https://www.google.com/nikcollection/

Kolob Canyon: Starry Night

When the wind blows and the stars shine bright,
When the moon hides it's glowing face,
I wander the high country in search of dark sky.
Looking for wonder so that I can share the magic with you.

---------------

Black and White stacked 2 frame panorama. Each "frame" was created by shooting an exposure stack of 8 images. The 8 images were blended into a single frame to reduce noise. The two reduced noise frame where then combined to produce a single two image wide milky Way panorama. The lower portion of the image, the mountain-scape was a 4 minute exposure using only starlight. It was blended into the the Milky Way composite to complete the image.

In a very short period of time I'll be spending 10 days in Grand Canyon - Parashant National Monument.
#ParashantNPS

Here is a new panorama taken near the summit of Lime Kiln Pass The panorama was created from photographs that I took on my visit to the monument yesterday. The western boundary to the Monument is behind me as I stand on the summit and look out over more than one million acres of wilderness.

I am very pleased to be able to say that I have been chosen to be the spring 2017 Artist in Residence (AiR) for Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument.

I will be "in residence" from April 28th to May 6th. During that time I will wander through this vast and beautiful landscape that includes 2 physiographic provinces, the Colorado Plateau and the Basin and Range. It's also at the junction of two physiographic ecoregions: the Mojave Desert and Colorado Plateau. There are vast vistas and Grand Canyon overlooks, there are Joshua tree forests, and not so ancient lava flows. There are springs, pine forests and many different varieties of cacti; some of which I hope will be blooming when I'm in residence.

I received some really cool news this morning. I've been chosen to be the Artist in Residence (AiR) at Grand Canyon - Parashant National Monument. AiR programs are highly competitive and highly coveted so I'm honored to have been selected. The residency is from April 30th to May 6th. This is only the second year for the AiR program at Grand Canyon - Parashant National Monument so I have the opportunity to be one of the first people to take part in this grand artistic adventure.

I still have to sign the contract but I'm very excited about doing this. April 30th seems so far away.

It is sad to say that part of Daily Life is the passing on of a dear and trusted friend. Our loving and gentle friend Molly, passed beyond the curtain on Saturday. She was a very integral part of our daily life and we will miss her dearly for some time to come.

When I remember our previous dog, I always think of the song Mr. Bojangles. "his dog up and died and after 20 years he still grieves." I'll grieve her loss for many years to come even if another friendly spirit enters my life.

Good-bye dear friend.

The other day I went out to Zion National Park with my good friend and shooting partner +Dewey Farmer. It was an awesome day. One of those days that you dream about. There was fresh snow, not too cold, good clouds moving along at a good clip, and some blue skies sprinkled in.

While there we ran into Jeff Pederson, who just got back from giving a workshop in Yellowstone.

The rock in the center is the Great White Throne, as seen from Big Bend in Zion National Park.

Recently we had a nice snowfall in Zion National Park so I headed out to the park to get some winter scenes. This frosted tree was near The Temple of Sinawava, at the far end of the main canyon. My friend +Dewey Farmer was with me and he too got some great shots.

256 Shades of Gray Online photography learning workshop free trial for the first month. 256 Shades of Gray is an incredible community but it's not for everyone. We want people to be happy so we allow people to join for the first month free. In mid-January, we'll send out invoices via PayPal. At that point, you can decide whether or not you wish to continue.

Best regards
