Here's a new image for my National Parks collection. This was taken a few days ago on national forest land just outside the gate to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Week 14: 52 Weeks of Life Elevated
Yellow Man pictograph form the Smithsonian Butte area in southern Utah.

Pictographs are relatively rare; especially here in southern Utah. Finding Yellow Man wasn't easy and it too two trips to find him. He was well worth the effort. I've read that Native Americans believe that some or perhaps all, anthropomorphs are sentient. To me, this is an interesting concept. The next time I'm in the presence of one of these "beings" I will be more respectful than normal; which is pretty respectful to begin with. It is always a good idea to honor the beliefs of others. Another idea associated with sentient anthropomorhs is the concept that they may be associated with spirit portals.

I haven't calculated the size of Yellow Man but I think he is about 3 feet tall. He's about 15 feet up the wall so direct measurement isn't possible.

Intestine Man
Week 12: 52 Weeks of Life Elevated

In keeping with my current interest and series, here is another pictograph from Southern Utah, Near Moab.

Intestine Man is a well known pictograph from the Moab area in Utah. If you search on images you'll get all kinds of stuff: t-shirts, purses, caps to name a few. It seems Intestine Man is a popular motif for tourist stuff. It also makes a very nice fine art print. Intestine Man is one of the smaller anthropomorphic pictographs. Gauging from my pictures, I'd say the pictograph is about 20 to 30 inches tall.

This is just off the road on the way up to the Island in the Sky unit of Canyonlands NP.

Week 11: Great Gallery
Canyonlands National Park
52 Weeks of Life Elevated

Last week my wife and I went out to see the Great Gallery in Horseshoe Canyon. The Great Gallery, which includes the Holy Ghost pictograph is between 70 and 100 feet in length; depending on where you measure from. The closest you can get is about 20 feet away and 15 feet below the pictographs. It's hard to describe what it feels like to stand in front of such a monumental piece of Native American rock art. It is both an art experience and a spiritual experience. (Week 10 was the Holy Ghost pictograph)

Getting there:
The drive out to the trail head is a 25 mile long well-maintained dirt road, about 1 hour on dirt. The turn-off is a few hundred yards south of the turn for Goblin State Park on Utah Highway 95. The hike is long and a bit difficult, depending on your hiking ability. It's around 7 miles round trip to get to the Great Gallery and a 750 foot decent/accent into the canyon. The hike takes about 4 to 6 hours plus time spent taking pictures and enjoying the sublime beauty of the Native American Art. It took us about 7 hours. As the temperatures start to rise, this will become an arduous hike for all but the most fit hikers/photographers.

The Holy Ghost fine art print project:
I'm working on a project to produce life-sized art works of the pictographs. Stay tuned for more information in the near future.

About this panorama:
This is a linear panorama composed of around 75 images. Each set of pictographs are photographed “straight on” so that each group appears to be directly in front of the camera. The composite image is 54600 pixels wide by 7800 pixels tall. It was taken with a Canon 5D Mark IV and a Canon EF 70-200mm lens at 200mm. Image editing took about 2 days to create 4 different panoramas that were then hand stitched in Photoshop. The final image, which I considered to be a draft image, is 54000 pixels wide; that is, native size is about 16 feet in length. While I think this turned out well, I would like to go back and reshoot it with a medium format camera to increase the resolution and scale.

Week 10: Great Gallery
Canyonlands National Park
52 Weeks of Life Elevated

Last week my wife and I went out to see the Great Gallery in Horseshoe Canyon. In particular I wanted to see the Holy Ghost pictograph. The Holy Ghost pictograph, at the center of the image is nearly 8 feet tall. The 8 figure together are about 15 feet across. The closest you can get is about 30 feet away and 15 feet below the pictographs. It's hard to describe what it feels like to stand in front of such a monumental piece of Native American rock art. It is both an art experience and a spiritual experience.

Week 9: Gunlock Utah Petroglyphs
52 Weeks of Life Elevated

For your viewing, a B&W version and a color version

#52LifeElevated #LifeElevated #Utah #cwlupicaphotography #256Photography #FineArtPhotography #RockArt #UtahRockArt #SouthwestRockArt #Petroglyphs #Canon #CanonMarkIV

It seems like there are thousands of petroglyphs sites all over southern Utah. The trick is finding them. The "etiquette" for rock art is to keep the locations secret so that the sites will be less subject to vandalism. In keeping with that view, I will only say that this petroglyph is from a fairly well known site near Gunlock Utah.

Petroglyps are tricky to shoot. Petroglyphs are almost always created by chipping away the black, desert "varnish" and exposing the lighter colored rock underneath. The varnish has a shine and is very reflective. They lack definition when in the shade and are too reflective when well lit. For some petroglyphs you can use a diffusion screen to help cut down on the reflection and/or a circular polarizer (CPL). I tried using the diffusion screen on the day I took this but the wind was too strong and the diffuser was too much of a sail to be controllable. The CPL helped a bit but there was still a lot of reflection that I had to remove in post processing.

Week 8: Kolob Canyons; Sublime Contemplation 4
Zion National Park
52 Weeks of Life Elevated

I can see the top of Kolob Canyons from my living room in St. George. It's a long way away but I can get a sense of the weather before driving up there. I'm not always right. I went there a week or so ago and the clouds never broke. The light was terrible but I came away with a couple of new spots I wanted to shoot from.

This is one of those spots. I've shot this spot before but it still remains one of my favorite places on the Kolob Canyons Road. It about half way and not far from the Lee Pass parking area. There's a big rock at the far end of the parking lot. Up on top of the rock is a great spot but a bit treacherous, so be careful if you decide to scramble up there. I had 3 spots that I absolutely wanted to shoot for a series but at each, I had to wait for the clouds and the light to be right. I got 2 of the 3. The 3rd, was getting late and the clouds had mostly moved on. Still, a great day at Kolob Canyons.

This is the middle image of a 3 image series, or perhaps 4 if you consider the 6 foot panorama that I have from nearly the same spot - taken in the spring. The 3 new panoramas measure 5 feet at native size.

I always seem to be at least a week behind with my 52 week even when I think I'm catching up. Perhaps week 8 in a few days - well it's been a day or two and I checked the calendar and I'm still a week behind. I should be on week 9 - lol.

I went to Page Arizona yesterday to meet up with some new friends that I met online. I was curious to see what the forest service is doing to Horseshoe Bend and it looks like the rumors I heard were true. They're building a new road and it looks like a new parking lot and viewing platform on the edge of the canyon. There were a ton of people there on a Friday afternoon including several buses of Asians and other international tour groups. There was hardly a spot to stand. I can't imagine what it will be like if they make it even easier to access.

Many of the images you see of Horseshoe Bend have the bend lit up much like you see here but the sun is setting on the horizon. I have to suspect a bit of Photoshop trickery - no that I'm above that. But, this is natural light pretty much the way you would have seen it yesterday if you'd been with me; minus the color of course.

This is a 5 image panorama processed in Lightroom, Photoshop and ADP Pro v3. The stitching was done in PTGUI - Photoshop produced a horribly warped image. When it really matters, I almost always turn to PTGUI.

The black and white conversion and the luminosity masks were done in ADP Pro. I'm experimenting with it in place of the old and trusty, NIK Silver Effects Pro. So far, ADP is more work but I like the results better. I'm pretty sure that, once I'm really up to speed with ADP Pro V3, I'll use it for most B&W work.

Week 7: Yant Flat
52 Weeks of Life Elevated

Yant flat is an interesting area of twisted rocks and eroded sandstone fins located only a few miles from St George Utah. It's one of those "local" secret places that people from the area know and share with friends. I was out there a few weeks ago with the St George Fine Art Photography Guild. (you find find them on https://www.meetup.com/StG-Fine-Art-Photographers/ if you live in the area)

I always seem to be at least a week behind with my 52 weeks even when I think I'm catching up. Perhaps week 8 in a few days.

The Wraith - White Pockets, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. I don't think I'd want to shoot star trails or camp near this rock in the dark of night.
