The Dark Crystal - The Director's Cut

This version on YouTube is apparently the original cut that Jim Henson did for The Dark Crystal. But the studio had it tweaked to add voice overs and other elements.

Early versions of The Dark Crystal were a bit different than the version we see today. Jim Henson and Frank Oz originally sought to create a much darker story that relied more on the audience and less on voice-overs and inner monologues explaining the plot. In this version there's no narrator, Jen's inner monologues are gone, and the Skeksis hardly ever say anything in English (Aughra speaks some Skesis too!). This version is much more modern and a little darker with this original audio and the slightly different score. Some of the scenes are moved around too, which adds to the surreal feel of the original film. Some test audiences were more casual moviegoers and responded negatively to this version so the Henson team redubbed the ENTIRE film to help explain the plot to the audience up front and make things more obvious.

Today in History: First Man-Made Self-Sustaining Nuclear Chain Reaction Initiated
http://adafru.it/b87112

On December 2, 1942 the first nuclear-chain reaction was initiated under the supervision of Enrico Fermi. The reaction took place in Cook County, Illinois with the Chicago Pile-1, the world’s first nuclear reactor, built as a part of the Manhattan Project. The site is now a U.S. Historic Landmark. From wikipedia:

On 2 December 1942, CP-1 was ready for a demonstration. Before a group of dignitaries, George Weil worked the final control rod while Fermi carefully monitored the neutron activity. The pile “went critical” (reached a self-sustaining reaction) at 15:25. Fermi shut it down 28 minutes later.

After the chain reaction was observed, Arthur Compton, head of the Metallurgical Laboratory, notified James Conant, chairman of the National Defense Research Committee, by telephone. The conversation was in an impromptu code:

Compton: The Italian navigator has landed in the New World.

Conant: How were the natives?

Compton: Very friendly.

Unlike most reactors that have been built since, CP-1 had no radiation shielding and no cooling system of any kind. Fermi had convinced Arthur Compton that his calculations were reliable enough to rule out a runaway chain reaction or an explosion. But, as the official historians of the Atomic Energy Commission later noted, the “gamble” remained in conducting “a possibly catastrophic experiment in one of the most densely populated areas of the nation!”

http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2014/01/15/cat-battle-armor/

100% wearable, flexible, and comfortable, the Cat Battle Armor is a for-reals armor harness for your kitty. Completely hand-made from durable veg-tan leather, this is no mere costume piece. Your cat will become an unstoppable force for slaughter in this fully articulated suit, shielding him/her from foes while allowing unimpeded movement across the battlefield or living room floor. The imposing torso section features several riveted, articulated plates and a terrifying rack of dorsal spines. Your cat’s hindquarters are sheathed beneath exquisitely arrayed overlapping scales stitched to a soft leather backing, adorned with nickel silver dome rivets. Midnight black scales and plates are finished with a glossy protective coat and seamlessly join together like the petals of a deadly flower. Adjustable at the collar with elastic and two nickel silver buckles, and at the belly with grommeted corset-style lacing for a secure, comfortable fit.

How To Make a Suit of Armor From Bottle Caps

One of the many wonderful aspects about cosplay is that you can create something awesome from an item as mundane as a bottle cap. Well, several of them. Josh used 3,284 beer caps to construct a suit of armor and became the Capped Crusader. Since he used caps from different types of beer, he has a flashy and colorful set of armor that’s mostly held together with Stretch Magic (commonly used for jewelry).   #cosplay   #costuming   #armor
