Passivhaus Projects in Ontario Benefit from Legalett Super-Insulation

Up in the “Cottage Country” of Minden Ontario is a surprise “hot pocket” of Passive House, or Passivhaus, projects – which considering that -40°C has been known in the winter and that there is no natural gas infrastructure and electricity prices are high means that a “super-Insulated” shell is a necessity, not a luxury. The perceived downside of building to the Passivhaus standard is often cited as cost, but with recent innovations in insulation and construction techniques, Passive Houses are proving themselves to be more affordable than most people think, with the construction costs comparable to custom house construction in this area. The payback for owning such an energy efficient building is actually pretty fast… and the savings then continue throughout the lifespan of the building.

Lloyd Alter of TreeHugger.com was recently in Minden at the invitation of Passive House Canada, and these are some of his observations in relation to the super-insulated Legalett Geo-Passive frost protected shallow foundation system used:

There are very few materials that can do the job that this foam does under the floor, and it is getting better as they improve the blowing agents and get rid of flame retardants for foam used underground.

Quantum Passivhaus will do very well with their new factory and offices…they already have nine orders for new construction and a few retrofits on the boards, which is pretty spectacular for a brand new operation.

Passivhaus is a tough standard, and as Bronwyn Barry notes, it's a team sport. Quantum Passivhaus appears to have put together a team that might make it more accessible and affordable and attractive to a much larger audience. They are on to something here.

Passive House is “In” in 2017 - Especially for Legalett Canada!

The number and size of #PassiveHouse projects in North America has grown very rapidly in 2016, whilst several mid-rise residential projects currently under construction will more than quadruple the number of available units and at least triple the square footage of Passive buildings in 2017. For example, Cornell University’s 250-foot-tall, 26 story, 270,000 sqft high rise under construction on Roosevelt Island will be the tallest and biggest Passive building in the world when it is completed in 2017...

Buildings utilizing the Passive House standard use dramatically less energy than typical buildings due to a high level of insulation, high-performance windows, an airtight building enclosure, minimized thermal bridges, and continuous ventilation with energy recovery.

Legalett, North America's foremost manufacturer of Super Insulated Systems for Slab, Foundations and Walls, recently announced that they have joined Passive House Canada in bringing this Building Revolution to North America... Read More at https://goo.gl/7D8TUu

Our Latest Innovation in Passive House and Net Zero Energy Design and ICF Construction

With a standard R-Value of 28, the ThermalWall PH Panel was specifically designed to raise the insulation levels of a building enclosure to those required for #PassiveHouse or #NetZeroEnergy #NZEB #ZNE design. Secured to the outside of any structure with virtually no thermal bridging, it can transform a code compliant R-24 wall into an R-52 high performance envelope. This easy to install, well-designed EPS Foam insulation panel is taking the North American continuous exterior #insulation market by storm...

Lloyd Alter, from +TreeHugger  just wrote this great article acknowledging that EPS may really be a wonderful construction material for high efficiency Passive House or Net Zero homes allowing a builder to achieve a complete and perfect insulated shell with no thermal bridges using just three building materials. EPS, Concrete and reinforcing steel.  Obviously, we at Legalett totally agree, let's face it, we've been promoting FPSF's and insulated slab on grade construction for over 30 years now, with many millions of sq ft of Legalett floors laid worldwide...

Also, Legalett's latest product ThermalWall PH Panels have been a huge success at Toronto’s 2016 Construct Canada/ +IIDEX Canada  Show in conjunction with their GEO-Passive ICF Slab forming system and +Fox Blocks ICF in the +Passive House Canada | Maison Passive Canada Pavilion. The constant nodding of heads and the many requests for quotations were indications that the ICF envelope has a new  following of construction industry professionals convinced that EPS (expanded polystyrene) is a good environmental choice for Passive House and Net Zero construction (ZNE & NZEB). Comments of “That just makes sense” and ”I wish I had known about this last year” were frequently heard, which is all positive feedback for the year ahead...

In the News: Legalett's Slab-on-Grade Shallow Foundations and Air-Heated Radiant Floors were recently featured in SAB Magazine. The Article (on Page 38 of the Fall 2016 issue) entitled "Prefab Form Kits for Frost-Protected Shallow Foundations" discusses slab-on-grade as a great alternative to basements. See why EcoHouse Canada recommends frost-protected shallow foundations not only for sites with high water tables or poor soil conditions - but for all slab-on-grade foundations.
