Yet again, I find myself inheriting and struggling to come to terms with other people's code.

Kind of like the gripe I have with iNotes when I use Opera. It says it's not a supported platform. But when I change the browser identifier all of a sudden it works. When will people determine usage based on browser capability rather than the browser name?

Anyone fancy hazarding a guess at what this is?

Thanks chaps. Sounds like plausible explanation. I'll just paint the innards and hope that sorts it.

When are manufacturers going to bring their RAM upgrade prices in line with direct sellers of RAM?

You're just paying 205 quid for a Chinese factory worker to install it for you :-P

I just joined the mass of people uninstalling the LinkedIn Android app. Just look at the most recent "reviews" here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.linkedin.android&hl=en

Why uninstall? Permissions!

Android lets you let your apps auto-update themselves. Which is nice (one less thing to do). What's also nice is that it disables auto-update on apps for which the new release has different "permissions". Permissions are things like "Use internet connection", "Make changes to files on disk", "View GPS location" etc.

Being the paranoid type, when a normally auto-updated app appears in my list of apps needing a manual update I make a point of checking what permissions have changed and I'm glad I did this time. What LinkedIn have done in the most recent release is ask for access to the "system log". I'm not exactly sure what's in there but I don't like the sounds of it.

That's why I've un-installed LinkedIn!

+Brendon Upson Me too really. I keep trying to make my profile "100% complete" and keep accepting connection requests. Have done for years, but am still to see any benefit of doing so.

Rather annoying Domino Designer bug du jour: When editing a Java agent if you ctrl-click a class that is stored in a separate Java Script Library it opens the file and you can edit it and it appears to let you save the changes. It just doesn't actually save them. Arggh!

Our daughter is poorly so my wife, armed with her iPhone, Googles NHS Direct.

Here's the result she saw: the top result is a scam site. The first real result it the number she wanted (a lo-call rate 0845 number) but, Karen being Karen, she clicked on the first link and then on the 0906 number that the site offers as a "connecting service". Apparently she didn't know 09 numbers were premium rate.

30 minutes later she's racked up a £40 call charge and her mobile operator bar her phone. Next day when she needs to call the doctors to make an emergency appointment she can't dial out.

Shame on Google for accepting ads from scammers.

Sometimes I feel like life is just designed to fuck me off. It's Wednesday now and what with one thing or another I barely feel like I've got started with working yet...

My new weekly lifestyle rules:

1. Only allowed crisps at the weekend
2. No alcohol on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday
3. Run at least twice a week
4. Leave the house at some point every day.

Been abiding to these rules for a few weeks now and feel all the better for it.

Good work. Thanks for leading by example.

My New Years resolution has brought similar changes:

1) Only one cup of coffee (w creme and sugar), per day, in the morning.
2) Do the power walk 4 mile workout with my wife at least once a week (sounds and looks girly but I've added 6 lbs. of muscle)
3) 1600 calories or less per day (struggling a bit with this one)
4) do something off of the "want to do" list once a month (as opposed to the "need to do" list)
