Beware of the 'Me Monster'

There was a time in my business where I started off pretty well in writing and developing thoughts through my blog but as you may have experienced yourself - you get busy doing other people's bidding and before you know it your content or drive to produce content goes by the wayside. Nonetheless, as I was going back through some older posts I ran across this one that I thought was worth a share.

Be More Human

h/t to +Ryan Hanley for sharing out this seminal post via +Mark Schaefer.

In my opinion this is foundational stuff whether you are a solopreneur or a Fortune 100 and more importantly for those who utilize digital means/tools in which to convey the messaging of who they are. 

Lets not forget that there are real live human beings on the other side of the monitor that we are communicating with. Individuals with thoughts, feelings, emotions, etc. Building repoire, trust, likeability are all key components to helping establish and build a human connection with such people.

Be sure and bookmark so that you can pull this one out with some regularity. If you're not just a slow learner but rather a fast forgetter then this is worth coming back to over and over and over.

You've heard these phrases being thrown around. Especially if you read business or marketing publications. 

The digital and social world are converging and to the companies that figure out how to successfully ride this wave as the two smack together will go the spoils.

Well you don't have to learn how to surf like +Srinivas Rao, but Srini did find the answer in his waves...

Be more human online.

We must use the digital tools at our disposal today to be clone of our offline selves, not some superhuman reincarnation we attempt to contrive the no longer anonymous digital world.

Authenticity.
Transparency.
Honesty.

People hate these words, not because their overused in the personal development space or because they're abstract concepts we cannot track in an excel spreadsheet...

...people hate these words because they're hard. If I want to be more authentic online, I can't just buy a book and implement a strategy. I have to take a hard look at myself and my business and make legitimate, intrinsic changes to way I do business.

That's hard stuff.

But's it's more human.

Humans who are authentic win in the real world. 

I'm not saying we're authentic, transparent and honest every second of every day, that's impossible. But we strive to live that life and in the digital space, our companies must begin to embody the quest as well.

It's what consumers want.

It's what I want, if I'm going buy from you.

It's time to be more human.

The question is who's got the balls to do it?

Google announced on Thursday it is rolling out new features and updates to its video chat platform Google+ Hangouts, such as colorful notifications and a sidebar which consolidates key function tools.

Among the new features is a new sidebar which touts key tools in one spot: “The most important part of a hangout is the people in the room, so we’ve consolidated important items (like invites, chat, and apps) into a sidebar that’s there when you need it, and tucked away when you don’t.”
