Over the past few weeks I've been spending a lot of time researching and figuring out how to get iPhone notifications to show up on Google Glass reliably.

Unfortunately as I've found out, previous methods of getting iOS notifications to show up on Glass is actually the result of an iOS Bluetooth bug. I won't go into too much detail but that method was too unreliable. https://gigaom.com/2014/04/29/how-to-get-all-notifications-from-ios-on-google-glass/

I decided to tackle using the proper method, which is the Apple Notification Center Service API in iOS 7. Since XE16 added KitKat and Bluetooth LE support, the foundation was there.

As of a few minutes ago I finally got it all working in a prototype. The GDK app has a low-frequency LiveCard which sits on the left of the clock and always displays the latest notification.

It runs in the background so new notifications are updated in real-time and a sound effect notifies the user (even if the screen is off).

I'm working on this as an open source GitHub project https://github.com/longzheng/glass_ble_ancs since I'm actually new to Android and Java development. If any experienced devs would like to help (there are a lot of bugs and quirks), please let me know on Twitter/Github/here.

There's still a while to go before I can release an APK, it's still too buggy when setting up the initial Bluetooth LE connection, and I need to actually put in a design for the card output.

Hope all the iPhone owners out there are as excited as I am.

If there are any other Melbourne Australia Google Glass Explorers, I made a public transport timetable app. You can say "buses near me", "trams near me", "trains near me", "trains departing, Southern Cross"
