Just stumbling across this now, months later.

"Vancian spellcasters should get all their spells, instead of memorizing a set number of them per day. This may seem like a lot, but that high failure rate means they'll lose plenty of them without casting them. "

This is a great way to turn low-level MUs into the loose-cannon, bumbling enchanters we know from genre fiction, instead of the reliable-but-boring one-shot wonders of classic D&D.

Thus, instead of our 1st level wizard firing off a single unerring magic missile the first round of the first encounter (and acting like a pathetically weak fighter thereafter), we instead get him paging through his spell book, fizzling on one spell after another until he's down to something weird and slightly inappropriate to the circumstances, but which he actually manages to get working and has to somehow use to the advantage of the party.
DCC Magic for the rest of us.
