Big doings in the Ig Nobel universe. I am very happy to announce the premiere of the new TV program. (And of course, this year's Ig Nobel Prize ceremony is coming up even sooner — on Sept 20!)

NOAA’s stormy robo-version of “Deck the Halls”. Listen if you are of stout heart and ears [via SarahZielinski]
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's automated voice sang the song "Deck the Halls". If you can weather hearing it, you can weather practically anything. [HT @SaraZielinski]

At least one of these videos is, we are told, a hoax. Anthropologists beware.

Wow. Charlie Pierce's history of modern US politics reads like vitriol, but it's almost entirely straight fact http://bit.ly/sDC8ON
The suddenly complaining chorus doesn't like Newt Gingrich because he'll lose, but the doughy fraud is going to kick everybody's ass on that stage in the Iowa debate on Saturday night

Today's the annual day-after-Thanksgiving Ig Nobel broadcast on NPR's "Science Friday". Many radio stations are also streaming it online.
Spread the word, please!

The drawing looks like the neck of a guitar. But it's not. It's the accelerating expansion of the universe, in cartoon form. Unless it's the neck of a guitar, maybe the guitar that's making the music that accompanies the 1-minute video.

"I know my students take the same approach when solving puzzles, whether it’s video games, mobile games, crosswords, or sudoku. They dive right in and tinker. So why, when faced with a physics problem, do many students suddenly freeze-up if they can’t see the whole solution right from the outset? How do we show students it’s OK to dive right in, go down blind alleys, hit deadends, backtrack, and try again?" http://fnoschese.wordpress.com/2011/08/31/problem-solving-paralysis

Don'tcha think it's a sudden reduction in cognitive overhead from perceived stress - like the teacher standing there tapping her foot going "Like what's wrong with you kid? Why don't you get it?"
