REAL TALK: has ANYONE on here gotten sick with salmonella from their chickens??

Are you guys as sick as I am of the yearly press coverage of salmonella 'outbreaks' linked to backyard chickens?

I'm especially irritated that news outlets get to write their snarky, puny articles and blame it on 'kissing, hugging, and snuggling' chickens. If you search the CDC website pages on salmonella, the numbers of people who 'kissed' poultry is super low- 4 in 2015. https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/live-poultry-07-15/index.html

So why is the narrative OMG THOSE WEIRD CHICKEN PEOPLE NEED TO STOP MAKING OUT WITH THEIR BIRDS at all the news outlets? Because it gets clicks.
The fact is, the overall numbers of people sick, expressed as a percentage, are incredibly low. Their most recent press release of 10 MULTISTATE OUTBREAKS is so alarmist- the 10 refers to 10 different strains of bacteria, and 'outbreak' just means more than 2 people got sick with the same bacteria. It seems irresponsible to scream OUTBREAK for 2 people getting sick in a state (sometimes less).

I wrote this after getting interviewed by the Detroit Free Press about the salmonella 'outbreak', because I'm actually kinda worried about the long term effect of coverage like this on people's ability to keep chickens in urban environments. Read for stats, stay for poorly drawn cartoons. #backyardchickens

Interesting, and seems to be accurate. Of course our ladies will be retiring in style, even if they're not producing (going on 5 years and still laying!) http://ow.ly/EJJ3300qeVM #backyardchickens
