M-185: The Only US Highway Where Motor Vehicles Are Banned ... "Highway M-185 in the U.S. state of Michigan, is the safest road in America because it is the only state highway in the nation where motor vehicles are banned. The restriction dates back to 1898, and since the ban, just a handful of vehicles have driven on the asphalt, other than the city's emergency vehicles. M-185 is peculiar for another reason — it leads to nowhere, because it’s circular and lies entirely on an island. And because it lies entirely on an island, it doesn’t connect to any other highways. No wonder, the M-185 isn’t listed on the National Highway System, which is an index of strategic highways and roads within the US that’s important to the country's economy, defense, and mobility. But one does wonder, why M-185 is called a highway at all?

M-185 became a highway in 1933. It encircles Mackinac Island, a popular tourist destination on the Lake Huron side of the Straits of Mackinac, running along the island's shoreline between the water's edge and woodlands outside of the downtown area. It’s a narrow paved road 12.8 km long, and narrower than other state highways. It’s very popular among cyclists because of the great views it offers of the straits that divide the Upper and the Lower peninsulas of Michigan and Lakes Huron. Over half a million people is said to travel along this highway each year, unless someone counted the same heads going around in a circle, over and over again.

Being a circular highway, M-185 has no specific termini. The generally accepted starting point is at the mile 0 marker placed in front of the Mackinac Island State Park Visitor Center. Starting from there, wooden markers appear at each mile.

The island banned all motorized vehicles by an ordinance passed in 1898, after residents complained that a doctor's car scared their horses and caused carriage accidents. Since then traffic is limited to foot, on horses, by horse-drawn vehicles, or by bicycles only. Until 2005, the unfortunate incident involving the doctor’s car was the only automobile accident in the history of the highway. Even the one that occurred in 2005 was a minor one —while maneuvering around a parked ambulance, a fire truck hit the open door of the ambulance causing a small damage. Frankly, that shouldn’t count as an accident.

A few times motor vehicles were allowed to be used on the road. Once in 1979, while filming Somewhere in Time, and another time in 1998 to commemorate the original ordinance that prohibited cars from Mackinac Island. A 1901 Geneva steam-powered car toured the island and was exhibited in Marquette Park before being towed by horse back to British Landing.

M-185 has been called the “best scenic drive” by some publications and one of the “great places to get your feet back on the ground". ..."

SIGN IF YOU AGREE #VIGANO MUST NOW RESIGN. According to an official Vatican statement, Kim Davis was among "several dozen persons" attending a reception at the Vatican embassy, "the pope did not enter into the details of the situation," and "his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support."
Moreover, it seems that the pope did not request Kim Davis be invited.
According to press reports, one man was likely responsible for Davis's invitation: Carlo Maria Vigano, a conservative church official who was appointed by Pope Benedict as Vatican ambassador to the United States (formally called the "apostolic nuncio").
Having created an opportunity for right-wing evangelicals to dishonestly hijack the message of the pope's visit to the United States, Vigano must now resign.
The pope didn't ask to meet with her. The papal ambassador made it happen.

I didn't know about this garbage. From Climate change, pollution and the ingredients in our food, this shows that the GOP wants to dumb down America.
The House voted to remove country-of-origin labels on beef, pork and chicken sold in the U.S., hoping to prevent a protracted battle over the labels with Canada and Mexico.

Better health? More productive? More time with your family? How very socialist.

From the article: "A Toyota service center that adopted the policy has reported "happier staff, a lower turnover rate, and ease in enticing new employees," and according to an app developer in Stockholm:
I think the 8-hour work day is not as effective as one would think. To stay focused on a specific work task for 8 hours is a huge challenge. In order to cope, we mix in things and pauses to make the work day more endurable. At the same time, we are having it hard to manage our private life outside of work [...]. We want to spend more time with our families, we want to learn new things or exercise more. I wanted to see if there could be a way to mix these things [...] My impression now is that it is easier to focus more intensely on the work that needs to be done and you have the stamina to do it and still have energy left when leaving the office."
Swedish businesses have started adopting 6-hour-workdays, and after reading about it, you'll want to clock out right away. The change is centered around the idea that it's better for employees

How is this even legal? This is open bribery of our elected officials. They are going against the will of the people in favor of corporate lobbyist.
Where did this kind of money come from? Those in favor of TPA were security brokers and investment companies who donated a whopping $11.3 million dollars for a "yea" vote. Big banking companies donated $10.1 million dollars. In other words, Wall Street hashed out millions and millions of dollars to push for the passage of TPA. -
John Boehner received $5.3 million for a "yea" vote on Trade Promotion Authority, while Kevin McCarthy received $2.4 million and Paul Ryan took $2.4 million.

Been coming here for years while on vacation and still loved it until the last visit. As usual, we were severed by the owner. The place was only half full, and while the food came out very fast and was good, the service was lacking, as we seemed to be the only ones the owner couldn't even be bothered to make eye contact with.

The place was once nice, but too much of the place is being handled from behind a desk. The both the Board of Directors (may as well call them Board of Collectors) and the HOA are so completely out of touch with the place that they can't even tell when the place needs more attention, despite having overgrown yards everywhere some with 3 feet of growth or more, trash cans at the curb for weeks, boats in driveways, improper signage, landscaping that hasn't been touched in years, and a landscaping company that has been neglecting contractual obligations for months. Hell, we can't even have a working security gate for much more than a month.

Never again!! Save yourself the weeks of aggravation and go somewhere else. The short story is when they were done with my vehicle the first time around, the workmanship was so poor it should have been considered a hate crime. weeks later, I'm still trying to get it fixed to the point where I had to get the insurance company involved.

Great food, huge portions, great service, great prices, and really cold beer. I dunno why this says "Liked: Margaritas", I drink beer or about any mixed drink without Tequila. Edit: . Years later still love it

They got off to a good start, made a boatload of promises, but over the years those promises were forgotten. The communities are remotely managed rather than having management onsite, which means too little interest in and support for the communities they are supposed to be managing, especially given that what little management staff there is will have to juggle several communities at once. Sometimes months will go by without even having an HOA manager without a word from AAM. Community updates have dwindled to an almost non-existent state and overall, AAM has stagnated as they've become too comfortable here.

Can't get these people to stop calling or get someone who speaks English fluently enough to at least let them know they have the wrong number. They leave messages in Spanish and broken English.
