Not all electric cars are supplied with "clean" energy, but they have the possibility of being 100 clean, which is more than you can say for an ICE vehicle.
Many people think plug-in electric cars use no gas. Well, that might be true. But then again, the electricity comes from somewhere, so you have to find out how your electricity is generated. Most of my electricity comes from nuclear. Your might mostly come from coal. You can find out here: https://oaspub.epa.gov/powpro/ept_pack.charts
Either way, be aware there is no such thing as a free ride, but at least with a plug-in electric car you can use far fewer fossil fuels than before and it has the hope of using all renewables in the future.
