Seventeen new, state of the art science labs with Durcon epoxy resin worksurfaces have opened at Medford High School.

The new, state-of-the-art labs will be used by both Medford High School and Medford Vocational Technical High School students. The rooms will allow for modern engineering, biotechnology, environmental science and robotics classes to be taught.

One of the highlights of the labs is they will help teachers meet the needs of modern-day curriculum standards, in an age when science and technology education is at the forefront.

The Interdisciplinary Science Building for energy research at Brookhaven National Laboratory received the Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary’s Achievement award for energy research due to its outstanding project management and comprehensive planning. These factors led to a successful delivery of a modern research facility that will advance breakthroughs in energy research and development.

Over 3,500 square feet of Durcon Epoxy Resin Worksurfaces are utilized throughout the many laboratories in the 87,700 square foot facility. Research space accommodates a diverse range of specialized tasks including testing corrosive lithium-ion batteries and utilizing ultra-low vibration apparatus to explore and fabricate new materials one atomic layer at a time.

Wilsonart LLC Completes Purchase of Durcon Incorporated

AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 8, 2013 -- Wilsonart LLC said Friday that it has completed the acquisition of Durcon Incorporated. Taylor, TX-based Durcon is well-known for its high performance, epoxy-resin work surfaces and sinks for laboratories and research facilities. The acquisition was first announced on October 14, 2013. Wilsonart LLC is one of the world's leading manufacturers and distributors of high pressure laminates and other engineered surfaces used in furniture, office and retail space, countertops, worktops and other applications. The company operates globally under the Wilsonart, Resopal, Polyrey and Arborite brands and has achieved success through a combination of outstanding service, high-quality products and a focus on providing innovative products and services to customers.

Wilsonart gets antitrust OK to acquire Durcon

Wilsonart LLC said Friday it has received notice from federal antitrust regulators that it can proceed with its acquistion of Taylor-based Durcon Inc.

October 25, 2013 - Temple-based Wilsonart LLC, a decorative laminate company, is looking to diversify by acquiring Durcon, which makes lab countertops and other industrial surfaces.
 
Financial details were not disclosed when the transaction was announced earlier this month.
 
The buyout adds even more momentum to Durcon, which has added roughly 100 employees in the past year and currently has 450 total. In April, the company closed a facility in Michigan and consolidated all of its operations into its Taylor headquarters, which has been running 24 hours.
 
Wilsonart expects the transaction to close in the fourth quarter. It will be financed through a combination of available cash and the company's existing credit facilities.

Durcon in the Running for Texas Employer of the Year

Taylor, TX - October 29, 2013 – The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has announced that Durcon Incorporated is one of five finalists for its annual Employer of the Year award. Durcon, the nation’s largest manufacturer of high-performance epoxy resin countertops for science and education, is being recognized for its recent growth which brought new jobs to Taylor, TX, and the surrounding Austin area, as well as its overall contribution to the Texas economy.

Other candidates for the award are from a variety of industries and include such household names as Caterpillar Inc. of Waco, Exxon Mobil Corporation of Baytown, GE Transportation of Fort Worth and Village Farms of Monahans. 

“All five Employer of the Year finalists were nominated based on their demonstrated commitment to their workers and communities, and their contributions to the Texas economy,” said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. “We are proud to recognize their contributions and highlight the positive outcomes that result from successful partnerships.”

The five finalists were chosen from among 25 private-sector employers who were nominated by their Local Workforce Development Boards for their contributions to the community’s workforce through innovation and collaboration with the Texas workforce system. The nominated employers exemplify TWC’s mission of promoting and supporting an effective workforce system that offers employers, individuals and communities the opportunity to achieve and sustain economic prosperity.

“These employers reflect the economic diversity found in Texas,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Hope Andrade. “TWC is proud of our Texas employers showing initiative in developing workforce partnerships, responding to unique workforce challenges in their communities, and promoting economic growth and stability.”

To date, Durcon has invested more than $7.5 million in its Taylor facility. With the assistance of the Taylor Economic Development Council and Rural Capital, Durcon has increased its Taylor-based employees from 220 to 430, while still actively recruiting an additional 80 new hires in production, technical, and managerial positions.

The 2013 Employer of the Year will be announced at the 17th Annual Texas Workforce Conference Employer Award Luncheon to be held at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio on Thursday, December 5. The 2012 Employer of the Year was Champion Cooler Corporation of Denison.

AUSTIN, TX – October 14, 2013 – Wilsonart LLC today announced an agreement to acquire Durcon Incorporated, the world’s leading manufacturer of laboratory-grade work surfaces. The Taylor, TX-based Durcon provides laboratory tops, student tabletops, sinks and other work surfaces worldwide, and is best known for its durable epoxy resin surfaces. Durcon will operate as a new, independent business unit of Wilsonart.

Durcon’s epoxy resin countertops were top choice for the newly renovated, technology-centric science labs at Buford Middle School. These 4 new labs feature 3D printing capabilities, touch-screen monitors, and moveable lab tables.

Director of Sustainable Design, Steve Davis, chose furnishings that encourage collaborative and hands-on learning. Davis specified Durcon’s epoxy resin countertops because they enhance the children’s learning environment through functional design and durability.
