BURKINA FASO. Tin Akoff. 6/03/1985: Filling guerbas with water at a pond close to the malian border.”
"It’s been there since I was bitten by the photography bug at 16, although I wasn’t aware of it until much later: the ability I think I have to piece together a long-term story, spread over several years, covering various locations, interrupted by other stories, gleaning bits and pieces and trying to make sense of it all. This picture of kids filling ‘guerbas’ at a pond in Burkina Faso was a catalyst. At the time I took it, I felt that it would be a decent picture. (You're never 100% sure, as so many things can still go wrong)  But that moment in Tin Akoff, immediately after the image was inside the camera, triggered an idea to do a story on the management of water in the Sahel region. Not about the famine or the drought itself, but what was being done to try and avoid it — how did people cope with drought? That precise moment in Burkina Faso, with the skinny kids who were totally adapted to their unforgiving environment, with the murky but precious water, initiated and defined what I would be working on nearly exclusively for the next 30 years: aftermath situations, threats to cultural identity, development issues.”

More than 20 garment factory workers died on their way to work in Svay Rieng province this morning in a traffic accident. Tens of thousands of factory workers making your cheap t-shirts face the same risk every morning and evening in Cambodia when being shuttled back and forth in open trucks or overloaded vans.

CAMBODIA. Kambol (Phnom Penh). 25/01/2011: Garment workers returning home after their shift in open trucks.

More on the plight of Cambodian garment factory workers in the ebook ‘A Fine Thread’ available at the iTunes iBookstore at the following link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/a-fine-thread/id793868280?ls=1&mt=11

The mirage is growing… I continue to follow the development of Koh Pich (Diamond Island). I started this in 2009 (see HERE), basically photographing the changing landscape of the island where many families who were providing vegetables to the people in Phnom Penh were evicted from.

CAMBODIA. Phnom Penh. 20/03/2014: Kong Chantha, land rights activist from Boeung Kak Lake, gets a 'Tiger Balsam' rub while several communities which suffered land issues gather in front of the City Hall to seek a final resolution to the lingering conflicts. Kong Chantha will be arrested in November 2014 and sent to prison to sit out a sentence of 1 year.

This picture is part of ‘Hearths of Resistance’, an ebook for your iPad or your Apple computer running iBooks which is now available on iTunes for less than 7$ at this link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/hearths-of-resistance/id983920575?ls=1&mt=11

With over 500 photographs and a video, an interactive map, a glossary available through the captions and quotes from protesters giving their definition of the word ‘resistance’, the ebook ‘Hearths of Resistance’ is an attempt to show the resilience of those who resisted the erosion of their human rights during the 18 months of turmoil following the 2013 Cambodian elections.

Prayer day at the riverside pagoda: I have been going there so many times. But recently the fun, or rather the excitement when taking photographs there has left me. What to do when the fun has left? Change I guess...

CAMBODIA, Phnom Penh. 17/05/2015: Street children selling fire to light joss sticks during prayer day at the Preah Ang Dong riverside pagoda hide for the photographer.
