Mid last year, I wrote an article for ACEL e-Publications about the successful technology integration. In the article, I discuss the fact that there shouldn’t be such a huge focus on WHY technology needs to be integrated but a shift towards HOW technology…

Year 2 at #stfelix  ended their unit with a bang! I must admit, my time management wasn't very good this term as I was getting my head around Year 2 for the first time. The end of the term came quite quickly and we didn't have as much as time for #ideation  and #prototyping  as I would have liked.

Nonetheless, the students used their hexagons from the previous lesson and came up with some how might we questions. Our final three questions were 'how might we teach Year 1 to recycle?', 'how might we teach our parents to recycle?' and 'how might we teach Year 1 about how technology solves problems?'

After some discussion and a vote, the students chose to teach Year 1 to recycle. I was a little concerned as we didn't have much time left before the end of the term and I didn't think the students would get the chance to show Year 1. I told the students our problem and they really surprised me! They immediately started thinking of solutions to our problem - they suggested they could share their work during recess and lunch time.

The students brainstormed ideas within their group regarding how they would answer the question. The chosen idea was to teach Year 1 about the three different kinds of bins. Many groups created posters, one group created a rap and another created a play.

The students never cease to surprise me!   #stageone

Year 2 at St Felix have been heavily immersed in their unit 'Jump into the Time Machine!' Some of the students brought in items from home that link nicely to products from the past.

Ensuring the students were making connections throughout immersion was very successful. The students surprised me when we sat in front of our learning wall to remember/reflect on our learning and make connections. They remembered more than I thought they would!

They then worked in groups to connect their learning with lots of discussion which then enabled them to easily write connections into their books.
