That was quite the winter break! We came down with and recovered from the flu, said sad goodbyes to our 10 year old dog who succumbed quickly to an undetected cancer, celebrated my father's 70th birthday, and added Megan Joseph to the Holding Space Massage team as event coordinator and assistant extraordinaire. Many ups and downs, and much to look forward to. I'm excited to get back in the rhythm of this fabulous work!

"Men have shorter lifespans than women but we don’t recommend sexual reassignment to change that. Tall people have shorter lifespans that shorter people but we don’t suggest that we try to make tall people shorter. Men with male pattern baldness have a much higher risk of cardiovascular events but giving them hair plugs won’t reduce their risk of a heart attack. Different people have different health outcomes for various reasons, but trying to make everyone look the same as a way to equalize their health hazard ratios and relative risks of all cause mortality is probably not the best way to go. Plus this is all based on the idea that our body size is completely within our control, which is not supported by the research."
Can you be obese and healthy? The latest study to address that question has some HUGE flaws. See what they are!

People who support disordered eating in the name of "weight loss" like to say "there are STUDIES!" but don't tend to like it when the significant flaws of those studies are pointed out. The fact is, the "evidence" often named in favor of calorie restriction doesn't usually say what its defenders think it says.

I meant to get up a post about how to eat on Thanksgiving. At 11pm the night of, the leftovers put away, the dishes (mostly) done, and that's not the post I wrote.
Many of us have fridges full of leftovers today. If you're among those so privileged, I offer suggestions for how to eat them up. (But you'll have to find the recipes and reheating instructions yourself.)

"I grow tired: but it's not the bone-tiredness of spending all day avoiding the plain tasks before my face. It's just the ordinary tiredness of cleaning a well-used kitchen." Ohhhh. Yeah, this one snagged me.

I wear many, many hats as a massage therapist and small business owner.
I don't always write poetry, but when I do it's at almost midnight and makes excessive use of line breaks and juxtaposition. (Or: why I adore what I do more than any other job.)

Soon, I'll write about how accepting and even loving our bodies doesn't mean we necessarily always like every part of our bodies. Soon...
I was blessed to grow up surrounded by body-positive, and belly-positive, imagery. It profoundly affected and improved my ability to accept and love my own belly, my own body. I recommend everyone who struggles to find beauty in their own body try it. Put down the photoshopped gossip magazines, and search out celebrations of authentic, diverse, amazing bodies. There is so much beauty in every-body around us. And the more we practice seeing it in them, the more we are able to see it, and feel it, in ourselves.

All that, plus awesome ridiculous bird pic.
Missed me yesterday? I missed blogging, but couldn't stay away for long. And then I realized that this wasn't a horrible error, but a chance to offer myself the compassion, the acceptance, and the gentle humor I find it so easy to offer my massage clients.
