#sharingeconomy greatest hit!
Aspiring musicians on a budget can now record their future No. 1 songs for free at Vancouver’s first public recording studio. All they need is a library card. Four sound studios and one recording studio with a control room opened at the Vancouver Public Library’s central downtown branch on Tuesday as part of the city’s new $600,000 “Inspiration Lab.

Talented Vancouver filmmaker David Lavallée's latest film addresses an important question for a post-peak oil world - something we all want to know: Given that 95% of all economic transactions in our globalized economy bear the footprint of fossil fuels, are we at the end of economic growth for our civilization?

I just donated to ensure this film gets made, and I hope you will too.

A new film that explores the rise of extreme energy and our necessary shift to a sustainable future. | Crowdfunding is a democratic way to support the fundraising needs of your community. Make a contribution today!

I'm giving a presentation to the students at Groundswell today about crowdfunding and just remembered this blog post I wrote now. It got edited down quite a bit so it's lacking meat, but will give you an idea of the general strategy.
Hilary Henegar was the campaign director and community manager for the successful Indiegogo campaign Fractured Land. Here, she shares her team’s 8 steps for raising funds – and building a movement. I experienced the profound power of crowdfunding through my participation in a campaign to raise funds for Fractured Land, a documentary-turned-transmedia project that follows … read more

Growing up seeing the despair in the eyes of those folks coming in and out of the payday loan shops in my neighborhood, I can't help but be overcome with a powerful surge of emotion reading about Vancity's uniquely human approach to serving poor people's financial needs.
A new alternative to payday loans officially launched by Vancity on Tuesday could make a big difference in the lives of people living from paycheque to paycheque, according to an official with Family Services of Greater Vancouver. Tulia Castellanos, director of strategic community engagement, said the Vancity program will be charging so much less in interest, it could greatly increase the rate that loans are repaid on time. As well, it could help...

Qmunity does amazing work in the region's schools to raise awareness and discussion around anti-homophobia and anti-transphobia. It's great to be able to support their work through transportation support!

Still, I don't want to live in Moncton.
It's time for another cross-country real estate checkup. News that a 19,000-square-foot castle -- that's right, a castle -- has been listed in New Brunswick for less than $700,000 caught our attention. The 107-year-old Castle Manor used to be care home but has sat empty for several years.

Why support the expansion of public transit? Because it's the key that unlocks the potential for all other modes - and makes possible innovative models like carsharing, ridesharing and bikesharing.
Gone are the days of silver bullet solutions. A personal car is great for many situations, but not for every trip; there are better tools available. The upcoming transit referendum is offering all of us an opportunity to vote for a better toolbox....

Researchers say some teens have a predisposition towards risky behaviour. #Modo8k charity partner Take A Hike Foundation is trying to harness those thrill-seeking tendencies, and turn them into a powerful tool for learning.

How a local delivery company is disrupting its own industry with a sharing app for "lifestyle couriers"
Everyone could use a little more money at Christmas. In Vancouver, a new firm is offering people the chance to make some by making local deliveries on their way to work, or elsewhere. They're dropping off anything from gift baskets to water bottles to chocolates - and they're all part of the new, shared economy.
