#MeToo

Today women are sharing. I will also share, although my experiences are minor in comparison to those others have had.

I have been lucky to have come away from interactions involving sexual advances and (let's be frank) blatant molestation fairly unscathed. I am lucky...and it makes me want to barf in my mouth to say that. To have to write that "I AM LUCKY" not to have been raped, tells us all something about our society. All it is is luck, and luck alone.

I have been these things:
>propositioned by men with authority over me
>forcibly kissed and groped by boys even in elementary school
>punished once by my school for fighting back (boys will be boys, right?)
>forcibly kissed and groped by men after I was an adult
>flashed by strangers
>flashed and propositioned by a co-worker
>followed home

I have also done these things more times than anyone should:
>stepped in when I see a woman or man being pressured inappropriately for sex, attention, or anything else making them uncomfortable
>physically intervened to remove a man's hands from another woman's body when it was clear she needed help
>walked people home
>reported people
>called the cops
>calmly explained to someone how their behavior could be interpreted in an attempt to diffuse a situation
>gotten aggressive with repeat offenders

Be an ally. Be aware. Be a witness. Be vigilant. Be ready to step in. Be ready to call it what it is. Be unafraid to be honest. Be ready to protect yourself. Be ready to blame the right person and not the victim. Be prepared to comfort and defend and shelter those who are "not so lucky." Be ready for blowback. Be brave. And most of all, rest assured that what we do to protect one another, give voice to those who cannot speak, or support those who need support does matter. It changes things. Too slowly, but it does change things.

Shadowed Forests of the Past
A place I left behind when “Hope was born anew… Bad old, dark places… Places where my life no longer dwells… Looking back upon the past… That wasting, dark, drear past… Come words from a long ago Where my soul no longer cowers. A place of wrenching loneline...

We can find open minds…
What follows is the transcript of a discussion in response to this image, posted by me on my Facebook wall. “Sister Mine” is truly one of my siblings. She is the most extreme of my immediate kin, who are all fundamentalist evangelicals. Most of my Facebook ...
