It's been eighteen months, but it feels like I started RecordBox yesterday. In keeping with the reflective holiday mood, I just wrote up some lessons from the journey so far. Enjoy!

A great percussion masterclass from Ustad Zakir Hussain, recorded in Kolkatta, India recently.

Notice the beginning of the video, he gets up from stage and goes to touch the feet of all the senior artists in the audience.

Such humility and respect for tradition from someone so accomplished is truly inspiring!

Touché . I can't understand how 90 hour weeks are good for creative output.
Normally I just ignore navel-gazing tech-industry articles like this, but people keep sending it to me, so I guess this guy is famous or something. Michael Arrington posted this article, "Startups Are...

I have really been enjoying the Steve Jobs biography. Here are some passages on product design which really resonated with me. I think this philosophy of going really deep to understand and express the essence is at the root of all meaningful creative endeavors.

Jony Ive:

"Simplicity isn't just a visual style. It's not just minimalism or the absence of clutter. It involves digging through the depth of the complexity. To be truly simple, you have to go really deep. For example, to have no screws on something, you can end up having a product that is so convoluted and so complex. The better way is to go deeper with the simplicity, to understand everything about it and how it's manufactured. You have to deeply understand the essence of a product in order to be able to get rid of the parts that are not essential."

Steve Jobs:

"In most people's vocabularies, design means veneer. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of a man-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers."

Amen.

San Franfrazzled: Once-in-a-lifetime picture of lightning striking iconic bridge

"They say that lightning never strikes twice, but this amazing photo proves otherwise.

An incredible eight bolts struck the Bay Bridge in San Francisco last night which was captured in this incredible shot by photographer +Phil McGrew who took the photo through the rain-soaked window of his apartment."

"Creativity resembles play.. As we create, our thoughts resemble eddies in a pool. They arise spontaneously, and disappear just as spontaneously. Sooner or later, however, these eddies connect and build into a maelstrom. This is what we call inspiration."
