The loss of life in the Great War was on an unprecedented scale, and many of the brave soldiers who gave their lives on the field of battle were from Ireland. With 49,000 records available, the Ireland Casualties of World War I "1914-1922" collection is the best place to search if your Irish ancestor fought and died in WWI. When it comes to family, we all reserve a special place in our hearts for our grandparents. Paul Griffin decided to interview his grandfather and the result is a short film which has a beauty and depth that moved all of us here at Ancestry and we wanted to share it with you. Watch ʺFrancis B. Griffinʺ a film by Paul Griffin here: http://ancstry.me/1sJNR2U

On the 30th of June 1922, during the Irish civil war, the Public Record Office was burned to the ground. The fire destroyed the vast majority of the extant 19th-century Irish census returns along with thousands of other records of the English government in Ireland. This means that other sources from Ireland are all the more important. You can see all the Irish records available on http://ancstry.me/1oi3QQJ here: http://ancstry.me/1oi3FoD

The 1911 Census was the first UK census where the individual forms were filled in by each family. This can give us some interesting insights into the people being enumerated. Catherine Stone clearly thought of her pets as family. Timothy the cat and Jack the dog were included on her census form. http://ancstry.me/1vrawPA
