Hi Jennifer. I really appreciate you taking the time to share the learning process of managing student work in Google Drive. I'm creating a website with helps for teachers for our district and will link out to your post, for sure :) The journal idea works - a teacher at one school in our district used it and it worked well.

One thing that I'm going to encourage teachers to do that are still newer to Google Drive, is to setup a "class" folder, and share it with the students in their class.  Then searching that one folder makes it easy to narrow down the multitude of docs/presentations, etc.  If students create the doc in the folder or drag the document into the folder, then teachers are spared the endless flood of document sharing notifications. Students invariably forget to "uncheck" the "Notify people via email ". I had one teacher create a separate email account because of that issue (wish she had asked me or another teacher for ideas on how to address that).

For the more tech. savvy teachers, I'm going to recommend using gClass folders, or keep it simple and use the powerful search capabilities of Google Drive. As a tech. coordinator, I know that I will need to help teachers give options for what works best for them. Thanks again!

P.S. We're giving our freshmen class at each high school Chromebooks this year, so this needs to be addressed for sure. In a district of only about 500 students, in the past year and half, students and teachers created over 25,000 docs/presentations/spreadsheets. Wow! Knowing how to access those is important.

Schooling and education/learning are two different things... time we make them more compatible..
Common issue but one that we haven't appropriately addressed - well worth reading and discussing
