Hi, everyone. For those interested in such things: Have a look at a blog post +Fergus Bell and I wrote for the +Online News Association, sharing some of the initial work of the ONA working group we formed to examine the ethics of social newsgathering. We're starting by identifying five key challenges the news industry faces (though you'll have to come back tomorrow for the last three).

OK, the secret's out — I've been elected to the +Online News Association board of directors! I can't wait to get to work. Thanks to anyone who voted, and especially to +Paul Cheung, my official unofficial campaign manager and master flier designer. Paul: I think the vandalized fliers at ONA might've gotten me a few extra votes. Congrats to fellow board newbies -- friends all -- +Jennifer Preston, +Kim Bui and +David Cohn. And I'm eager to hear (now and always) what people think I should push for on the board.

Hi, everyone. So, how shall I put this.... If you're inclined to endorse me here on Google+ as a candidate for the ONA board, I would welcome that. Just say so in a post, and mention me. You can similarly urge people to vote against me, if you prefer. As long as ONA members vote!

For those interested in this sort of thing: +Fergus Bell and I will be holding a +reddit AMA next week on the role of citizen journalists for news organizations, with a particular emphasis on ethics and standards. Wednesday, May 22 at 11 a.m. EDT. Yes, shameless self-promotion, but I thought some folks out there might find this relevant -- and this is a topic we've spent a lot of time thinking and talking about at AP for the past couple of years. Join us!

"Has it all become too much of a chore? Are the important life events of your closest loved ones drowning in a sea of banana slicer jokes?" +The Associated Press tech writer Barbara Ortutay looks at Facebook fatigue and contemplates whether the social network is going the way of email, evolving from "after-school treat to a dull routine." I have a feeling you +Google+ users may have an opinion on this.

About a year after establishing an all-formats presence in North Korea, +The Associated Press has announced that we are now operating a full news bureau in Myanmar. Details and a couple of photos below.

One last post about my talk with AP's Jean Lee about social media in North Korea at +SXSW last weekend: An audio recording of the talk has emerged. Give it a listen if you have an hour to kill (and apologies that you won't be able to see the pretty +Instagram pictures).

Hi, everyone. Sharing a Q&A that NetNewsCheck did with me covering various topics related to social media and the news. "News battle near" may be a bit breathless, but you get the idea. As always, praise, excoriation and mockery are equally welcome.

Yeah, +Beth N. Carvin -- the simplicity and speed of Twitter are key. A lot of people are looking to follow news developments in real time, and Twitter provides that, though not without some significant pitfalls (the risk of inaccuracies, false accusations, intellectual property theft, etc.).

As for Facebook being a news outlet, it's all semantics in a way. It's really more of a platform that contains news. Though they seem to be beefing up the role of news, so we'll have to see where that goes....

As some of you have heard, +Fergus Bell and I convened the first meeting today of a new +Online News Association working group focused on standards and ethics related digital and social newsgathering. If you do this kind of reporting as part of your job, and you're an ONA member, you should consider joining the group -- send us your details here: http://ow.ly/pYwkm. A bit more information is below. Questions welcome, of course.

Hi, everyone. I promise I won't post about this too much, but here goes: I'm running for the +Online News Association board of directors! So are lots of other good people, as you'll see below. The news folk among you should join ONA so you can vote for (or against) me in a few weeks — and because ONA is a wonderful and important voice in the news industry.

AP Standards Editor Tom Kent and I just released an update to the AP social media guidelines for employees. We're particularly proud of some new guidance for using social networks for newsgathering when sources are in dangerous or otherwise sensitive situations. Read on, if you're interested.

AP's Bob Reid, who knows more about Iraq than anyone I know, considers 10 years of war in Iraq in a story that also shares a few dozen stand-out AP photos related to the war. You'll also get the backstory on some of the images from the AP photographers who took them.
