My girlfriend and I decided to go to the Austin Zoo on Valentine's Day 2014 since it was a beautiful morning and afternoon. She had been before and told me that it was basically just a bunch of farm animals like pigs, goats and llamas. She was either completely out of her mind or the place made some major improvements. This zoo is AMAZING! First things first. PEACOCKS! There are peacocks everywhere! Just walking around, digging holes, looking majestic and all outside of any confinement. They have like 5 tigers, a lion and some leopards. As well as a ton of monkeys and some foxes as well. It's a really neat place to take your kids if you have them. I don't have kids but if I did, they would enjoy it. Not only for the animals but also for the train! They have a train that goes around the zoo kind of like the one at Zilker Park if you've ever been there. All in all, the Austin Zoo was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it. They could use the community's support since they are an animal sanctuary as well.

It is really nice. You can be so close to animals. It is quite expensive but it worths it. The entrance looks small but the entire zoo it's big. Just DO NOT TAKE the train ride.

I brought my daughter to the Austin Zoo and she had a fun time. It is a lot smaller than the San Antonio Zoo for reference, but they still have some of the big animals here like tigers. I think the train hit it out of the park for her and it was worth the price to sit and relax for about 20 min.

I like the idea of the Austin Zoo actually being a sanctuary for rescued animals, but it hardly looks or feels like a "sanctuary". The zoo itself is small, so they enclosures they have for these animals are the bare minimum size. The lions obviously don't get along because one lion had huge gashes on his side from his cage mate. The monkeys are in small cages with one or two branches (they live in tress in the wild, come on!), and when they're not screaming at each other, they're staring out into space with the most depressing looks on their faces. Some of the monkeys looked like they were losing hair, although I don't know whether it was from stress or some type of mange. They have construction going on directly next to one of the only nocturnal animals in the park. That's like having construction right outside your house while you sleep during the night! Oh, and not to mention the whole place literally smells like poop. Does no one regularly clean the cages? I know the zoo means well (which is the only reason I gave two stars instead of one), but the amount of land they have is not ideal for the amount of animals they take care of.

Found this place to be just perfect for a family with small children. It's small enough to not be overwhelming - you won't be exhausted from schlepping kids around. Admission was reasonable and the food truck they had onsite was enough for our picnic bench lunch. Would be a fun place for a child's birthday party.

I love that this zoo is here because it really isn't your typical zoo, it takes in animals that have been neglected as well. My daughter loves it because they have all sorts of animals and it's very big, and you're able to feed the animals as well. The place is shaded and the trails are nice to follow, and also a snow cone vendor there to offer a nice cool down after walking around.
