Tomorrow (11th November), Penrith will mark the day 100 years ago when the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War. At 10.40am, there will be a Civic Parade to St Andrews Church, where at 11am a two-minute silence will be observed, followed by the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial in St Andrews Churchyard. A Remembrance Day Service will follow, which is open to everybody.

From 1pm there will be a special Remembrance exhibition at Eden Valley Artistic Network featuring work from several local artists reflecting their response to events of The Great War. The exhibition will close on 17 November.

Later in the day, Penrith Town Council will be participating in the Battles Over, A Nations Tribute. The Last Post will be played by Bugle at 18:55 at Penrith Beacon. The 201 names of those fallen from Penrith in the First World War, which were provided by Penrith Remembers Group, will be read out by the Town’s Mayor, Councillor Scott Jackson.

At 7pm, with kind permission of Lonsdale Estates, Penrith Town Council in partnership with Andy Neen, of Cumbria DJ Store, will light up Penrith Beacon as part of the nationwide Beacons of Light project.

The lighting of the Beacon will be seen from view points across Penrith, between 19:00 and 21:00 hours. The beacon of light will extend from the Beacon to St Andrews Church from where at 7:05pm St Andrews Church bell ringers will ring the Church Bells as part of the national Battles Over – Ringing Out for Peace project, which marks the end of the First World War. When the bells fall silent members from The Eden Valley Artistic Network are coordinating an evening of remembrance entitled “Remembered” at the George Hotel, and will present a poem and music to close the event at St. Andrews.

Great to launch the 2018 sales of Cards for Good Causes today with Cards for Good Causes and Cumbria Classic coaches.

'All aboard for Charity Christmas card sales at Eden Tourist Information Centres.' Father Christmas and Mrs Christmas found themselves transported back in time when they boarded a 1991 Leyland double decker bus to help deliver hundreds of Christmas cards and gifts..........
