When I travel for work, I really rely on my iPhone (to the point where I idiotically don't even write everything down and find myself totally lost when the phone goes dead). But when used to travel, before phones and before the internet - it led to some real magical encounters and interactions that probably wouldn't be possible if I had been as digitally connected as I am today.

Ever since reading Henry Miller's "Tropic of Cancer" I've had a thing for Pernod, the anise flavored liqueur in France that you drink diluted with water.  Then, reading Orhan Pamuk's "Museum of Innocence", I rediscovered the appeal with rakı - a similar drink found in Turkey.  Here's a great guest post by a Turkish couple (and former Cross-Pollinators) all about rakı, and the "meze" you eat with it.  There's even a cute video they made of the clear rakı turning cloudy white when water is added.

In the spirit of 21 Jump Street and CSI, I bring you the Italian Food Police - Special Unit.  Their first mission to collect evidence against against restaurants serving crappy, overpriced food to tourists.  Don't miss episode 1!
